I want to share that I ended up using a single 5'x8' area rug directly behind the screen and it supports the screen very well. I screwed (use washers) the top of the area rug to a 5' long 1.5x1.5 wood beam and then used 2 straps to hang it. Stores display area rugs by hanging and I think it will be very durable. It reduces the screen indentations after impact greatly. If you are patient, area rugs can be purchased used on Craigslist for $20 to $30. Find the ones that are clean/new and more plush and 5x8 or 5x7 in size.

Area Rugs as screen backing

After 3 days it is doing fine but it is too early to tell. I expect it to hold up better than moving blankets because most of these area carpets are very sturdy. They are also heavy so you can hang only 1 behind the screen. Using 6 screws with washers to screw one end to a piece of wood is a good and easy way to hang them. I run 2 straps between the area rug and the wood and then hang it up right behind the screen with the wood behind the area rug. The piece of wood should be just slightly below the horizontal emt pipe to prevent being hit by balls.

My screen will be hanging using slotted angle iron but I have a 10' ceiling with a 16'x9' image so I'll have about a foot of space above the screen to play with. I'm going to angle the surrounding trim out a little bit so there should be some space between it and the the angle iron to minimize any chance of balls shooting back at me. The good news is since my house is undergoing a renovation I already have a few shaggy area rugs I can use instead of just throwing them away.

I have a 9x9 screen so I need only one. Your screen is much bigger you should have 2 area rugs.
