Old screen behind new Screen....worth it?

Good Morning All.

I have been using a Carls preferred screen for a while now and am looking to make the jump to the premium. I have the adjustments pretty dialed in to have very little bounce back. My question is, do I leave up the old screen and put the new preferred screen over the top? I am thinking this could only help with sound and bounce back. I built my own frame to hold the screen, so I am not concerned with weight on the frame.

Also, every time I work with Carl's Place, I am more impressed than the last time. Great people, great products!

I have a Carl's premium backed up by an older Carl's premium. I'm not sure if it benefits the screen. I tell myself it does by supporting it.
I would back up premium with preferred. Benefits maybe??????

I believe it does. I built my frame with 33 mm tubular then started with a tensioned sports type netting as a foundation behind the the screen side , roof and sides. I overlaid that with 2 x archery weave nets and tested for bounce back which was negligible and decent image . Did this as proof of concept type exercise , making sure I had got the engineering right before investing in a HD screen. Later ,I was able to get in on the direct from the mill screen , so overlaid that on the archery weave screens , 3 years on and a lot of balls hit and the direct from mill screen is still perfect, zero noise ,zero wear and zero bounce back.
I am a big believer in supporting the screen where possible . Ball bungees on all 4 sides generate equal tension all round and a ripple free screen.

My first Carl's premium I had backed up by netting and I think the netting reduced its life. When the ball impacted the screen and compressed it against the net knots. I think the netting knots weakened the impact screen.

Wizard of Coz I agree, I think a net actually wears on the backside of the screen.

Do you have pics I would love to try to build this. I don’t see many good options and like the idea of the net for added safety. Any issues with Ricochet shots or beginners using it? And what’s the size you built thanks!

Thanks for the info. I did order the premium and will try to install over the old preferred screen. I will update on my results.

Has anyone gone from a preferred to a premium? Noticeably different?

Yes. Premium is wayyy nicer and far more quiet. They really aren't comparable. You will never go back to preferred imo.

Is the image quality way better or just a little better?

I do think it made a drastic difference towards the better. Really happy with it.

I recently upsized my carls premium screen from 8x10.5 to 8x12 (built a new frame). Just on a whim, I decided to use the old screen as a reinforcement for the new screen. It doesn't span the whole frame, but most of the grommets matched up perfectly with those on the new screen so I just ran the bungees through them both. So here is the strange part - because of the bounce-back issue, I had removed quite a few of the bungees on my original screen. When I put up the new screen over the top of the old screen I used every single grommet and hardly have any bounce-back at all. I think that having the old screen behind it must deaden the blow a bit. Another benefit is that I don't have those really deep impact craters either. I don't think the new screen gets to deflect as much and looks better as the picture isn't distorted from the craters. So far, I am a huge fan of the two layers of screens!

I have a Car's Premium. I had read many posts on here about folks using double screens, moving pads, memory foam, etc. behind. I asked Carl's directly about this and got the following reply: "We've found that there's not a ton of value in that method. It's not uncommon and other people have been successful with the method but we find it to be unnecessary and have concerns about the material potentially wearing fast by having something behind it."

I have used a Carl's premium, it develops depressions just like everything else. I do acknowledge it does produce a slightly better picture. But the ballmarks remained regardless of tension, or lack thereof. I currently am using a Shop Indoor Golf Preferred screen with the Carl's hanging behind it, even that develops & retains ball marks. I think it's one of those really tweaky adjustments that are hard to define and I need to spend more time trying to figure it out.
