Hi GSF Gurus,
I currently use the Spornia SP-7 as a net, but my worst shots miss it entirely (whether a hard shank to the right or hitting a moonshot with my driver) and I’ve in fact hit neighbors’ roofs/walls on multiple occasions. I’m therefore considering, out of necessity, setting up a golf enclosure/cage in my backyard ($500-$800 range, but flexible). I do have space for a 10x10x10 enclosure and wanted to pick your brains on a few things.
1) the area I’m thinking about is maybe 12 feet deep. I’ve read on this forum that the general rule of thumb is to hit from the same distance as the cage height. But If I don’t use a projector (e.g, SkyTrak with iPad for my display), are there any reasons why I couldn’t hit from within the cage itself maybe 7-8 ft away from the target (e.g., with 2-3ft of cage/netting behind me)? Alternatively, would a 10x10x5 cage work as well to prevent my errant shots - knowing that I’d be hitting from just outside the cage (rather than from within it like my 10x10x10 proposal)?
2) my house has two windows behind the target area, and I’d much rather have my neighbors mad at me than my wife. Since my enclosure will be outdoors, I want something that can withstand the elements and, in conjunction with netting, I was also considering using velcro to attach foam interlocking mats (like the kind you might find at the gym) to all sides. The mats on the top of the cage will likely need to be slanted to avoid water collecting there. But I haven’t seen anything like that done in any of the setups I’ve seen on this forum. Thoughts?
3) any recommendations for netting and frames/enclosures would be greatly appreciated (if there’s a recommendation for a complete solution with pipes, whether EMT or something else, I’m all ears). Not a great golfer and relying on your collective expertise to get better at the game!
