  • How to extend height of raw mil impact screen?

I'm looking for suggestions on hanging my raw mill screen from an 11ft ceiling. The screen in raw form is 10ft high. However, once it has Velcro sewn in the top and wrapped around a retractable pole in the ceiling (about 10 inches of material) and a 4 inch hem is placed at the bottom of the screen for a weighted pipe the total height remaining isn't as low as I would like. I can either lower my retractable pipe in the ceiling or extend the screen with another fabric.

Any suggestions for which way to go, tips for sewing this beast of screen, or material fabric to use?

I've thought about just using gorilla fabric glue. It seems to be one of the better fabric glues but I'm not sure how well it will hold up especially in the garage with varying temperatures.

If I go the route of extending it does anyone have suggestions on what material to use. I have a sheet of black twill or something. It is much thinner than the screen (not many things wouldn't be) and seems to bunch up while attempting to sew together. This could also be because the machine I used was too small. Should I use vinyl or something else that is heavier to help pair with the impact screen material better?

Any advice is welcome especially if you have experience with a particular approach.

Why do you have 10 inches of material wrapped at the top? It seems like you may want to just hang the top down lower either with less fabric wrapped around or velcro the screen to another fabric at the top to wrap that around the retractable tube. What did you use to sew the screen with?

Good question. The pipe is the heavy duty motorized system from metech and I believe the diameter is 2.5 or 3 inches. The approximately 10 inches of overlap is to ensure the weight of the screen hangs on the screen itself and not the Velcro contact point.

I don't think I'm following your other questions because thosenare the options I presented above and I'm looking for feedback based on that. I did try and see one piece of fabric (I think twill but not sure anymore) but that didn't go well because it bunched up in the sewing machine. The machine was probably too small for something as thick as these premium impact screens and I also think trying to "pair" it with a thin fabric makes for difficult sewing as well. Looks that the recommendation is to sew/join similar thickness fabrics. I'm curious if vinyl would sew better since it has weight and a bit of rigidity.

My other option is just glue everything together using gorilla fabric glue. I did receive a bit of feedback from someone that they had success using that glue on their screen.

      Thanks for any feedback.

I would go see a professional and have some material added to the top using an industrial sewing set up. Heavy duty sewing job IMO to do it right.
