  • Fold to ceiling screen. Cage vs just a Frame of EMT?

I need to have a set up that can be torn down/put away easily in my garage and I'm evaluating options. I currently have a Mevo+ with a screen that pulls out on curtain track. I've had to hit away from my garage doors due to the space requirements, but that's not ideal as I have to accommodate for a 6" raised section of the flooring. The curtain track has worked pretty well overall, but the screen doesn't pull tight and is a bit frustrating.

With a remodel of the garage and the purchase of a BLP I'm considering switching and hitting towards the garage doors. To do this, I'd need to either roll up the screen (similar issues to curtain track) or fold the screen up to the ceiling. I'm leaning towards folding the screen up to the ceiling so I can build a frame to keep the screen tight. Ideally, I'd like it so sit as close to the ceiling as possible.

My question is around the feasibility of just using an EMT Frame vs building more of a cage style that I have seen. What are the reasons everyone builds the cage style? Is it for padding/curtain attachment? Is it to reduce torsion/deflection when hitting? For reference this is a double garage bay and my impact screen is 13' wide.

I dont want to build it and then need to re-do it but I'd prefer to build a frame style so it can sit nearly flush to my ceiling when retracted. I can use thicker EMT or Square Tubing to offset deflection. My side curtains will likely be on airplane cable, so that isnt an issue. What am I missing? Rough sketches included to try to visualize what I'm thinking.

If it's going to be freestanding, I think the cage is the only way to do it. Otherwise if you can fasten to a wall or ceiling, I would think a frame would be fine, especially if you have a way to fasten the corners of the frame.
