  • Outbuilding Garage Build

New member here. My wife and I are building a new 30x30 outbuilding/garage with 11-foot ceilings and a 12-foot lean to on one side very soon. We live in Ohio, and I plan to have the building insulated and have a furnace for the winter. A good portion of the building will be used as storage (zero-turn, side-by-side, and other garage type things) but I want to put in a dedicated golf simulator.

I have considered SIG PRO12, Carls, and GungHo enclosures but I am leaning towards a Bullseye Studio enclosure. the new building will be metal (not a traditional pole barn), so I am going to purchase a camera-based launch monitor. I already have a gaming PC. I do need some advice/recommendation on encloser dimension and projector. I am considering a 4:3 ratio 9x12 enclosure or a 16:10 ratio 9X14 enclosure. 14 feet wide is the most that I want to go so I have enough room in the building for other items as mentioned. I think 9 ft high for either enclosure is good so I could hot wedges with worrying if the ball stays in the enclosure. If I go 4:3 ratio at 12 feet, will I be disappointed in losing 2 additional feet in width? If I go 4:3 then I will purchase the 4K BenQ AK7000ST even though my gaming laptop is better at 1080P, but I will use the space to stream 4K using Apple TV. If I go 16:10 9x14, then I purchase the BenQ AH700ST projector that maxes out at 1080P. I am actually leaning towards just purchasing this projector regardless because I am unsure how much of a difference it would be between 1080P and 4K. Decisions...decisions! Any help would be greatly appreciated or other considerations.

    Thank you in advance!

Ok, I will do more research on here and probably just wing it.

You can also build your own screen enclosure. There is a good written guide on Gung Ho Golf’s site, under articles. This is not too hard a project, but maybe not quite as professional as a purchased screen….for example, you can (and will) hit a golf ball that gets sucked up between the screen and surrounding frame or blackout fabric.

Projectors…. Most come in 16:9 default ratio, which I think is similar to default movie screen format. Mine (and many others) screen format is 4:3. You can crop width (but cuts out some of the course), change projector or graphic card ratio, or build to movie dimensions. If you have the width, why not have a 16:9 screen ratio so you can also watch movies?
A review of several projectors late last year compared the AH700st and the TK710sti and found the latter, even though rated has having less lumens, brighter (more lumens) when at a setting that didn’t distort golf course colors. But there are certainly some added auto sizing/focus features of the AH700st I bought the TK710sti late last year and am quite satisfied with it. Projectorcentral has a lot of useful information, and this site has a wealth of experience but less activity in the outdoor golf season, but you can read prior posts and learn.
      Have fun with your project!

Thank you so much for the comments. I will consider 16:9, I am also going to look at Projectorcentral because i have never been there.

Do you prefer the Projector Central Throw Calculator better than BenQ Golf Sim Planner? I really like the latter because I am a visual person and I like the 3D rendering. Also, I have not been able to get the Throw Calculator to give me a 16:10 ratio. I think my setup will give me about 9-10 hitting to golf screen and the projector sitting just behind me around 11 ft without causing shadows.

BENQ does now have a good 3d image on their throw calculator. Projector Central.....use the aspect ratio of 1.6 to 1......it is the same as 16 to 10.
