  • Need ideas for impact trimming around screen....

I am going back and forth between a free standing cage enclosure or a built in. If I mount slotted angle to the wall and use velcro on the border of the impact screen....what material do you guys use for the gaps on the sides and top? Ideally I want something 10-12 inches wide that is stout enough to take impacts and sticks to velcro.

Some ideas in the link attached. I am doing the same right now. Basically I am making a pad for the top and sides from a 1" foam wrapped in carpet. My first go round may not last as the foam is like stryofoam insulation that will compress over time. Also I do not know about bounce back yet. I just put up the first piece today. Will need trimming and then the sides. I am attaching them with many many 1/2 staples. There will be baffles in front as well to take a blow. For the sides only a wicked shank will hit them. The screen is 14 feet wide and we are hitting from 10 feet. The side panel I will have to see how they lay against the screen. If needed I will put a bit of velcro to hold them against the screen, but I want some movement so that there is some give. I do not want to tear the screen.

I went to Home Depot and bought 30 feet or so of black rubber carpet runner and cut it into strips. To attach it, I poked holes and actually bolted it to the angle iron then put black caps on the bolts. The bolts are only 1/4 inch and the caps come with a part that goes under the bolt to hold the cap. It looks perfect and cost very little and took extremely little effort. I thought about padding on the sides. Glad I didnt bother.

Great idea! Is this stiff enough that will lay over the screen as side pieces as well? Will it accept velcro on the back side? Got a HD part number?

Keep the ideas coming! Sure beats $10-20/sq ft if it still looks good.

That is exactly how I did it also. I only need it on the top so i cut it into strips and used it as a baffle also works perfectly.

It's black standard carpet runner. Comes in a roll and is sold me the foot. I bought some and cut it. Not sure about Velcro but if carpet glued, it'll work.

Sorry for the off topic question but I see these types of comments often on this post and other posts. I don't see any link attached however I do see a photo. Are you referring to the photo that you posted or did you somehow attach an actual weblink with more information? I guess you might have put a link to the picture with the forum converting the link to the picture however you do say "Some" as in multiple ideas which made me question if I'm not seeing something. Thanks.

Are you logged in? There are photos posted. I don't know why you can't see them.

Which type of foam and carpet did you use? Rigid or Flexible? Got HD item numbers? I was thinking about speaker box type carpet (which hopefully will adhere to velcro) but I would like something heavier that can still be pulled tight and adhered over foam.

I also have a killer idea for wall and ceiling padding, but I am going to need to make a test piece this weekend.

I am in the middle of design and build of my simulator. My screen is 14 feet wide and the room is 15 feet wide. This leaves the sides exposed for the

I made a test piece that I plan to use for the screen trim. I cut vinyl and wrapped black automotive headliner around it. I used 3m spray adhesive to Bond them and do the corners. It looks really promising. All available at joanne fabric.

Can one of you take a picture a little further away so we can get a better perspective? Sorry that would be really appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Here you go. I don't know why but it will only post in landscape. It's actually a shot of the side.

What gap do you have between the wall and the edge of the screen. I know Cory told me 9.5inch minimum if attached with Nylon straps. I am probably going to be closer to 12 inches.

Also, how did you seam the carpet for the top run?

The carpet is as long as needed. HD has it in rolls. No need to seem. It's about 4 inches from wall to screen. Here's the view.
