Top of Enclosure

I plan on having a simulator in my basement. Ceiling is unfinished. (wood beams) Enclosure would be 10" wide, 5-6' deep. Ceiling is 9'3". So barely high enough. If the enclosure is 9' tall, that does not allow the netting on the top much room to give. Should the height of my enclosure be 8'6" which would give 9" of netting leeway? And/or put some black felt or something else to lay on top of the netting?

How far back you hitting from? Your ceiling height is fine if you are under 6ft tall.

At 7-8 ft back there is no reason for ceiling protection. The worst case is the ball his the screen and then barely kisses the ceiling. Without a finished ceiling, I wouldn't bother as a anything will affect your follow through.

If you are hitting from further back it is a different story.

Just tack plywood up there and staple carpet to it. It'll cost you around 5/8 of an inch of ceiling height and look great. That's what I have. Any ball hitting it will be going toward the screen so fine.

I have a dry wall ceiling, and don't want to accidentally put a hole/dent in the ceiling by having a wedge hit it on the fly.

How much value is there in adding a ceiling net "just to be safe"?

It depends who will be hitting in your garage. If non or casual golfers will be hitting then take a clue from golf stores which all have top nets. That said even good golfers tend to miss the net when they tee it high and try to kill it or decide to try a flop shot.
