  • home sim set up and enclosure build out

    Hi all,

finally signed up and able to post after many weeks of sifting through the many interesting post on here.

I am in the "design stage' of building my home Sim, and will initially use an optishot2 i picked up...but expect to upgrade to sky track (if they ever deliver a decent sim experience and I can get over that.....delay , or possibly a GC2 in summer time as $4.5k+ right now fro 2nd hand is just too expensive for my game...

I have cleared a 10*10*10 space...with about 3m additional space for swing...and now just buying the cage corners, poles, netting, impact screen, and possibly blackout covers to make the projected image even brighter....

    LAUNCH MONITOR / SIM:
for now, i will be making use of the Optishot 2, which I recognise is more of a entry model and club speed / face measurement tool...but using as a starting point.

in terms of the next step up, have been looking for a 2nd hand GC2, but still too expensive for me. have also been keen to hear about the ES16...but after all the fanfare before pga merchandise show...bit disappointed. so most likely would be sky track..if the get the software (but I can see that discussed in other posts...so won't harp on here)

    CAGE / NETTING / SCREEN
have looked on amazon, and some of the recommended places here - but ultimately I think I will get the 10*10*10 connectors..and perhaps not go so deep on the cage.

    Questions:

    1. how taut does the netting need to be...and is it the same on sides, back and roof.??

    2. currently looking at a green netting...but for sim use when you have black out curtains does this look weird...my preference is back netting, just that the green comes with a cage set i am looking at...so may have to buy another net if really annoys me.......if so, any reccommendations?

    3) I believe at the back I will need to leave space between the net and the wall....and may also get an archery net to go infront of the back net...but does the impact screen then sit flush against this..or do you recommend a gap between net, archery net and screen??

    4) if I need to leave space, then I am assuming I will need to get a cage that has a second vertical pole same distance from the back pole as the screen to the net (but unfortunately the cage i was looking at was square..i.e. only 4 vertical poles and not 6.

    5) does it matter how much space there is between the cage "sides" and a wall. I will most likely have blackout curtains flush up against the side as well. (I'm thinking even if a ball hits the wall (softened by net and curtain), it would only ricochet forward to impact screen...or is this a big risk. (Sim will be for all family, and especially my 9 year old who is just getting into golf, but can shank the odd ball...as does his father!!)

    6) On the roof of the cage, I am thinking of putting blackout material or a Black Tarp (which may be better for longevity in the garage).. assuming no issues here...??

    7) for the hitting screen.. I have seen many options highlighted on the forum, but most a bit expensive, so will probably just go for a double sided impact screen I can get made up for me with ring holes around the edge to fasten to cage. and may upgrade to proper screen at later stage. on a 10*10 cage...what size should I get the Screen...is it just a bit shorter all round so that can be tightened to the screen with bungees etc?, and would you fill the whole height (when only projecting 4:3 or 16:9), and if not fill whole height...would you put in middle, or start from top or bottom of cage??

    8) Archery net - I assume this should be the full 10*10..or less??

    9) Hitting Mat / platform, I am thinking of doing DIY as have seen many good references on the forum, and cut out a space for the Optishot...and then buy the additional turf insert from Jagman (I think). when I eventually use a Launch monitor...do i need to remove the optishot, and have another Turf insert that can fill the gap and then hit off this...or would you just create 2 hitting surfaces (one with a pull out space for optishot..or even protee), and the other permanent.

    10) any recommendations on turf I should be looking at if I have a separate permanent hitting surface on the hitting platform. assuming the rest of the platform will just be thin putting type material that I can also extend from hitting platform for a putting ramp as well.

I know there are a lot of questions, but would appreciate all and any advice as I am dead keen to start ordering the materials and kicking off the project asap

    cheers

I'll do my best to offer some advice, albeit out of order (probably)..

    I'd recommend starting here: http://customdesigngolf.myshopify.com/

If you call them up, you can talk about what you're hoping to accomplish, and get some advice about how to proceed. I bought most of my equipment from them and have been happy with it. They talked me into a expandable hitting cage (the side that's to my back goes into another stall of my garage, so I can conceivably remove a car and bump it out a couple of feet), though I don't use that feature all that often.

I'm happy with the Divot Action hitting insert, though I'll probably be replacing the one I have with a tee insert for one without (I use the Tomahawk golf tees, which work perfectly for a sim setup).

I have a 10x10x10 setup, and have the top of the cage left open to the ceiling. I lined my ceiling with sound-deadening foam, and I really like the way that turned out!

The netting should be relatively tight, but almost all of the impact is going to be absorbed by your screen. The screen should probably be zip tied to the top, and you should have some bungees on the bottom. I believe that most say that tightening on the sides should not be done (to prevent denting on the screen).

The blackout curtains are great, I have them and it really helps to close out the rest of my garage, and thus adds to the immersion.

I only have an inch or two of clearance between one of my walls (the one I'm facing) and the netting. I haven't had any problems - I've probably shanked one off of it, but I honestly don't care much about the appearance of my garage wall... and besides - by the time I need to take down that huge hitting cage, it's probably going to need to be repaired and repainted anyway! I think you need at least a foot from the screen to the wall, and more is probably best. I have my screen directly in front of the netting.

I have a 10x10 hitting screen (maybe a little shorter?), and mostly project in 16:9. I usually have it a little lower (about middle) when playing golf, and higher when watching tv, etc.

Making your own turn isn't a bad idea. I have a 5x5 hitting area right now, and one complaint I have is that it's difficult for me to gauge the distance of my putts. Even those that would be within the constraints of my cage (within 7 ft) are hard to get a feel for because they roll off the mat, and onto my garage floor. I plan to build up the entire floor of my hitting area to address that issue.

Lastly.. I wouldn't build too much around the optishot. You're going to want to upgrade it as soon as you get this thing setup (I had a P3 that I built around, and now wish I hadn't). I chose the Skytrak because of the price, but also because the distance required to get accurate ball flight was minimal (I think it's only a couple of feet of travel), whereas some of the other monitors like Trackman require more room. It could be that the Trackman is just more accurate because it has more to work with, but I don't really know that for sure, and had difficult finding the answers I was looking for. I definitely didn't want to spend 10k on something to figure out I didn't have enough ball flight for it to work!

There isn't a lot about setting up a sim room that's cheap, but it's really not all that bad when you consider what you're doing.. building your own golf room! Do your best to take your time and get it the way you want it the first time. I always find it's cheaper to do it that way, going the budget route inevitably means I'll be upgrading later, and thus dropping more money than I would have if I were more patient when starting. I can't really remember all of the pricing for everything I did, but I think everything, including the sim, was somewhere around 4-5k.

Does anyone have the recommended distance that the Skytracker should be from the impact screen. I am doing a build now and this measurement is important to finishing this thing up. Thanks in advance.

I got it about 7 feet from the screen right now but it could go even closer. The area skytrak is looking at is pretty small so basically if you can swing through skytrak can read. I'm building a new sim room right now just because I need a little more space for my swing. I can swing my driver at my existing room but it is tight.

Hi DB, and thanks for the great feedback... Really appreciated.

Interestingly I did write a long email to customdesigngolf but chased twice and still not heard back. Maybe will try to call.

I am also looking at the skytrack, but I didn't think it came with any sim software of note at the moment, as it would seem the forum has been awash with unfulfilled expectation of TGC...

That said, I may still look to buy one and join the masses hoping, whilst in the meantime getting better reads of my shots.

Any idea where I can buy a ST, as I will be travelling through Nee Jersey and New York next week and was hoping to pick one up.... Or order on line if they can guarantee delivery in my timescales.

I think custom design basically operates through phone, sort of an archaic company, but that's not all bad since they'll help you get setup in your particular space.

You're right that ST doesn't come with any real sim software, just some practice software (range, minimal games). A lot of people are frustrated, but I've been relatively patient since I've been able to swing anyway. I've been following the news, and it now seems like Perfect Golf is a really good option, and that seems to be more cost effective than TGC and the other options out there.

I ordered my Skytrak direct from the source, I'm not sure where else you can get it.

Has anyone tried using material or curtains instead of side netting???

It would be good if I can open up the space a bit when not in use rather than a fixed 10 foot cage... I.e. When using I pull the cutains fully out on lady and right ( and possibly across the top, and then pull back to maybe 4 feet or less when not in use.

Just wondering if it will stop the ball the same as a net... And last!

Many people have used other materials on side netting. It is there to stop shanks/deflections more than anything else which means it isn't subjected to the high energy shots that the main impact net is. So feel free to focus more on visuals and modularity without worrying about strength.

Thanks.... Got a feeling there will be plenty of shanks to contend with, so good to know.
