  • Recommended dimensions and distances

Greetings! I'm new here and recently purchased an OptiShot 2. I'm very eager to hit real golf balls and would prefer to have a screen/projector setup. At the moment the only space I have that seems to be sufficient is my garage - and even then, with the garage door tracks and pole in the center, space is tight. My goal is to build (or purchase and modify) a screen and net setup that will fold up out of the way to the ceiling.

I've been searching through build threads and I haven't come across much in terms of general recommended dimensions in terms of screen sizes, distance from screen, net placement, length, etc. I definitely want to hit all of my clubs (driver + wedges). Width-wise 8' is ideal for me as it would allow the entire screen to fold up between the garage door track and center motor track. Is there a general rule of thumb on distance from the screen and how far out nets should come?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Charlie

No rule of thumb here. Too many variables. For optishot, you can be as close to the screen as you want as long as you are able to swing the club. Same for gc2, skytrak, p3proswing. Nets need to come out as far as they are needed to ensure protection. If you have friends over, you can't have enough protection. Bad golfers will find design flaws very easily. As far as the garage, there are things that can be done to improve clearances, high lift tracks, tracks that follow roofline, side mounted door lift motors, etc. For a screen, you could go wider if it was mounted to a cable,, that way you could slide it in and out like a shower curtain. You would need something to tension the sides though so you don't have too many waves/wrinkles.

I have a NetReturn Pro with the impact screen add-on in my garage, it is about 8 feet wide. I hit from 6 feet away from the screen. Projector (BenQ 1085ST) is located about 7 feet away from the screen, mounted on the ceiling.

For screens, wider is better. I find 8 foot is good enough, but would like to go wider. 8 foot wide leaves me with a 4:3 aspect ratio (1600x1200), which is not the native resolution of my projector.

I would recommend you see if there is any possibility of fitting a wider screen. If not, an 8 footer will get the job done. You can always project a wide-screen image (1920x1080), but it will not fill the entire screen. I prefer 4:3 filling the screen, even though the image quality is a little bit lower due to scaling.
