All, I am in the process of piecing together my sim room in my basement. Right now, I have a 10' x 9' Supertex screen (hanging type) suspended from the ceiling and about 5"-6" from the wall (poured concrete). I am hoping to use a couple of 1.5" memory foam mattress toppers to cushion the impact. I already tried using foam insulation boards from Home Depot but little punch 7 irons were rocketing back at me and increased the noise of impact.
Questions:
Will memory foam really react that differently?
Should I leave a gap between the memory foam and the screen AND a gap between the memory foam and concrete wall? Any advice on how far the gaps should be? I really can't tell from previous posts how to get the best results and if you can place the foam against a concrete wall.
Is 1.5" enough or do I need to double it up to 3"?
Should I just move the screen out further from the wall and then just put the memory foam against the concrete?
I was also debating getting some golf netting to hang directly behind the screen and use the memory foam but wasn't really sure how the netting would really offer that much more cushion?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
General Rambling/Thoughts:
Future Plans:
I am planning to get some remnant pieces of SynLawn here in Columbus, OH to build myself a nice platform to sit flush with my CCE insert. I was thinking about creating a platform with plexi glass under the CCE insert that would float an inch or two above the ground to create some give when hitting. Dumb idea? I still need to buy a projector but am leaning towards a Ben Q 1080ST off eBay.
Current Setup:
I am currently using JNPG displayed on a 50" TV off to the side of my hitting mat. Just using foam Callaway balls that came with my screen and the Kirkland Signature balls for chipping and putting. Seems ok, but my woods really suffer using foam balls off the tee. I have to really go after iron shots to get close to my normal yardages with the foam balls. Hoping the move to actual golf balls will remedy most of my yardage issues. I've had my SkyTrak at the range and most of my yardages seem very accurate (especially short irons). I am also very impressed with JNPG putting, pretty spot on but still using 8ft gimmies to speed things up. Hoping to make the jump to TGC next year when my JNPG subscription is up.
