  • Shanking Shots on CCE

I've had my CCE for about 2 weeks and have the inate ability to shank the hell out the ball now. It doesn't happen to me at all on the course. I'm an 8 handicap and have no problem finding the sweet spot way more than I don't IRL.

Anyone else having this issue ????

I've studied a pile of my impact tapes....all are consistently higher than normal and way inside.

After much thought I figure I must be sinking down in the mat at 215lbs and causing the ball to be sitting higher than my normal arc. I've put some 1/4" flooring under the area where I stand and not the ball and that seems to have worked me back towards center consistently so far today and my distances went way back up close to normal IRL. Gotta find something thicker to try.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue??? And any suggestions you may have!!

and on a lol note my screen name is shank12u and I am shanking everything in front of me.

For anyone who cares or has the same problem.... my problem is definitely not as much the mat as it was in my swing. Loss of posture through early extension was causing me to shank the heck out of it regularly...even more especially after I get tired and tight thru my lower back.

Might be late replying to your post but I too have this problem. I dont shank on the course, doesn’t happen on other range mats but I shank it every time with wedges and anything shorter than a 9 unless I put the ball right at the toe. So frustrating. I honestly don’t know how to fix it.

I think the softness of the mat has something to do with it.

I am an instructor and shanks are a mysterious thing. Me personally, I believe that the CCE mat is very good for fake turf. I do not think that the shanks are due to you sinking in the mat slightly although the mats are soft. Your swing is the same both on mat and real turf, you are making contact close to hosel regardless of turf and are releasing your hands too fast which causes the ball to be caught between a closed club face and the hosel. On real turf your able to get away with it due to the club not grabbing the turf but rather cutting through it so the club is not closing as much but I bet it is coming close to hosel. On CCE the turf is grabbing the club rather than cutting through and closing face more which is causing the ball to deflect off hosle. Most people think the shanks are an open club face but most often its a closed face. This is why when people try to fix it it gets worse as they try to shut face more to cure the shanks but rather it makes problem worse. Slow your hands down and let body naturally release the club. Another thought is the club could be too upright and hosel is digging too much in the ground.

Without seeing you hit the ball I cant tell you for sure but this gives you something to look at.
If you want online instruction I can Help. You can down load the V1 App for free and video your swing and send it my way through the app.
        Message me if your interested.

I had the same experience recently. I'm a 10 handicap. Could be the mat exacerbated an issue in my swing. Got in my head bad. A rocket of the EMT pipe in corner of my sim cage would bounce back with minimal loss of velocity!

Although, I noticed when I was careless (not 100% focused/committed to shot) it was more likely to happen. I discovered (1) like Wormburner said, mat was not forgiving if I tried to flip my hands to accelerate club head. Have to keep the forward press/delofting/hands ahead through contact. (2) My weight had crept to the balls of my feet and toes at address on all shots. I think this was causing me to actually move closer to ball during swing. I rebalanced weight with heels and stay there through swing. These two things cleared it up.
