  • Quick & True Putting Turf

Does anyone have experience with Quick & True turf for the putting/flooring area? I'm looking at installing a 12x12 turf area in front of my hitting mat with a few holes cut into it. Same distributor as Real Feel Mats so it would be a savings on the freight. Positive and negative experiences welcomed . . . .

Not familiar with that turf by name but I am sure it is one of the putting turfs manufactured by the handful of turf manufacturers in the Dalton GA area. The name "Quick & True" is just a name that the reseller uses to market the turf. Turf manufacturers sell the same turfs to resellers and each put their own name on the product to make it appear like it's their own. Not aware of any true manufacturer that will sell their turf direct to the end user.

Did you get a sample of it to check it out? Not sure how you are saving on freight costs unless you are local and picking it up. There are some really good putting turfs out there and some that are not so good. The better turfs typically cost more money, but you can get high quality putting turf for around $4 SF (not including shipping).

I'm sure you are right about that. (I am saving on freight b/c i am also buying my CCE from them and will get it on the same truck -- sorry for not being more clear on that!). see the link below and let me know what you think. paying in the $3.75 range psf, fyi.

Not a bad price and you get free shipping. It’s a good deal if the turf is good. They do not reference any specs on it. After what I’ve gone through on turf I’d recommend getting a sample shipped to you before ordering. You should get it within 5 days max. My turf in my sim looks similar, and it is the STI PL306 turf manufactured by a company called Controlled Products. It has the 5mm (1/4”) foam backing on it just like in the pics on the website you referenced. This does not mean it is the same turf. Many turfs have the 5mm foam backing. Some are better than others. JR Mats may tell you where they get the turf from and provide the spec sheet on it.

Btw, is your plan to glue down the turf other something else? Not sure I would have them cut any cup holes in it. All depends on what your looking to do.

I plan on laying it directly onto the concrete garage floor loose. They've told me its heavy enough that it will lay flat and not move at all, perhaps i will need some double-sided tape in the near corners but that's it hopefully. I'll talk to JR Mats as you suggest.

I'm curious why you think I shouldn't I have them put holes in it? I was going to ask them to put three holes -- one in the middle close to the screen and one on each of the left and right sides staggered. The turf is meant to deaden shots coming off the screen, finish the look between the mat and the screen and be a practice putting surface. (I'm not big on playing many simulated rounds, I like to practice a lot).

Not a fan of cutting into turf for a hole that is so shallow. It would be one thing if you had a built-up sub floor and could put a half depth cup in, or core a hole in the concrete and drop a full depth cup in. I did the latter in my basement and it worked out great. Personal preference I guess.

As for laying the turf on the concrete, I've had some issues with the turf in my garage laying flat. It has something to do with the 5mm foam backing. It is stiffer than the turf I have in my basement. In hindsight I would have got the turf I have in my basement as it has a thick rubber backing and lays down real nice. It is a higher end turf and rolls really well. I went with the turf with the 5mm backing for the sim because I was building the floor up to a certain dimension so I could cut the turf (and 1/2" EVA foam floor tiles underneath) and recess my hitting mat flush with the top of turf. Cutting into the turf with the foam on the back results in the turf wanting to bow upwards (not lay down flat). Carpet tape may hold it down, but you may need a spray adhesive like 3M Super 77.

Best advice I can give you is to get a sample and see how it looks and performs. Most turf installers do glue down applications indoors. I didn't want that in my garage in case I wanted to role the turf up or move it. I personally think the turf I have with the 5mm foam backing would be better glued down with a spray adhesive. The dealer I bought it from knew I was intending to do a loose install with a recessed hitting mat, but he just didn't pick up on it. Don't think he does a lot of sims or loose turf installs.

I have a JR Mats hitting mat. It's called the Duffer. Just got it recently and it is a great mat. Same thing as the CCE Real Feel but with a shorter pile height. It does not grab the club like the CCE and is firmer under foot when standing on it. From what I can see JR Mats sells quality products, but I would still want to make sure the turf you are buying from them lays down nice, or they can give you technical direction on how to get it to stay down.

            Good luck!

Well, it ain't quick. I need to now make a stimp to find out how fast/slow it really is. Funny this post just came up as I ordered their piece that is 1'x10' and it just came in on Friday. I made a putting platform in my garage and used leftover carpet remnant. The ball wobbled a little due to the nature of the carpet. I then came across this and figured i'd give it a try. I'm not sure I would say it's even true either, the ball doesn't seem to hold a true line that great on the limited amount i used it over the weekend.

I installed the turf and I am very happy with it. It lays flat without having to use any adhesive or double-sided tape (which i thought i might). Its speedy, and putts rolls quite true on it. Placing some break into it (a towel under the turf) also makes it feel more natural. the shallow cup isn't great but its enough of a difference for the ball to roll into it most of the time (and I would have this issue with any turf that i wasn't willing to put a sub-floor under.) All in all, pleased with the purchase. And it looks really good too.
