I think you would be very happy with the Divot Action mat. In addition to switching to a more forgiving mat and rest, this also helped my elbow heal fairly quickly:

With a descending blow, the club is still going down into the turf either way and the CCE is going to grab and resist the club movement more than other mats. Unless you are saying that a fat shot will have a steeper angle of attack and therefore dig deeper into the mat than a clean shot, I don't see the difference. I had a CCE and developed a bad case of golfer's elbow and I hit the ball first nearly every time. Rest and switching to a divot action insert has cured me!
I don't know what caused your elbow problems but it isn't the mat. I've had elbow problems for years and the CCE mat has not bothered me at all. Actually the harder mats are worse on your joints. If you don't believe me go to most any commercial range and hit irons off their hard mats and see what happens..

I suspect most having complaints just aren't used to hitting so many shots per session as they do when first getting their simulator and mat.

I don't know what your definition of decent divot is but most tour pros don't take a pelt anymore.

Sorry, but it could very easily be the mat. There are many examples of people having this is issue and I don't believe anyone is saying to go to a harder mat. By design any of these mats that have a pile height enough to be able to hold a tee is going to grab and slow the club head more than those designed with a short pile height. For some the CCE is excellent and doesn't bother them at all and not so for others.
