  • Turf*between the stance mat and screen

I was wondering what people are using for the turf between the stance mat and screen. I need a 10' x 10' piece to fill the area. I called the local Synlawn, but he wants $600 for a leftover piece that size, which seems excessive.

I have the Fiberbuilt stance mat and now I am looking for the turf between the stance mat and screen. My setup is in the garage and needs to be taken down during the winter.

    keither5150 anything in Calgary?

    Thanks.

I am out in the garage as well and went with the outdoor carpet that looks like turf from Home Depot. They have precut 6x9, I think it is, or you can have it cut off the giant roll. I laid down antifatigue squares from tractor supply under the carpet to cushion the ball bouncing on it and to keep it level with the hitting mat. You could also use horse stall matting under the carpet which is a bit thicker but is also pricier. Does it look like a $600 putting surface, no. Does it look a lot better than cement and easier on the wallet, yes.

Thanks. It would look better than the carpet that I have now that was salvaged from the garbage.

Thank you. That is closer to what I was expecting to pay at under $4/sq.ft. Just need to find someone close to me that has something similar.

I bought used turf from https://www.ondecksports.com/artificial-turf/used-turf for that same area. Its not putting turf , but great to stop ball from bouncing and rolling everywhere. I would say stimp of 6-7 like a tight fairway. Its unpadded on bottom. Looks great and its about .5 inch thick. Much nicer than really thin stuff from Home Depot - that doesn't really stop the ball from bouncing. Had that stuff originally.

This was the description from my invoice - 15’ x 11’ NTOV1Super, Unpadded Overstock Artificial Turf

That piece cost me $245 but the shipping to residential is $185. If you live near Georgia you could pickup and save shipping. I thought it was still a good deal even with shipping.

Looks great - wish I would have gotten a piece to fit whole room behind my hitting mat. Will have to cough up shipping again, though...

Thanks. Shipping to Western Canada will be too much though.

I found a piece of turf locally on craigslist from a fitness center that was changing locations. Works great for stopping the ball, quite slow on the stimp though, but makes the garage look so much better. I also had the HD stuff and if you just lay it on the concrete, the only thing it does it prevent the ball from getting scuffed, still bounces around like mad though. If you're going to use that, good idea mentioned above about using the foam squares to deaden the ball a bit.

Thank you, that's what I'm going for - to make it look better. I got the basics last year and I'm looking to improve it this year. I have the foam interlocking squares already with an old carpet on top.

$600 (US) for a 10x10 piece of Synlawn turf is excessive, especially for a left over (remnant) piece. My bet is they don't have a remnant piece and are simply charging you full price for what would be a 10' long piece of turf. The turf does not come from the mill at 10' wide, it's either 12' or 15' wide and cut to desired length. A fair price assuming it is the better Synlawn turf would be $300 (US). Keep in mind that if you order new turf they are going to make you pay shipping, or work the price into the quote. They should not be charging for shipping on a remnant.

I'm not sure where you can get a good price on turf in Canada. I'm not aware of any turf mills there, so the turf would have to be shipped likely from one of the mills in Georgia or perhaps a mill on the west coast. A new piece at 10x12 would be 120 SF, and in the US you can get top quality turf at $4 SF. But then you need to add in shipping, which is not cheap and is delivered via freight. If you can find a remnant or something in stock where they don't gouge you on price, go for the local buy. But make sure what you are buying because there are a lot of different turfs out there and some you want to stay away from.

I have bought turf from STI in the US and they have a dealer in Calgary. You might want to check them out. http://synthetic-turf.ca/calgary/contact-us/

Thank you for the great information and the link to STI. I found a few other dealers as well and I'm going to call around an try and find some remnants.

Which product did you buy from STI?

I have the STI PL 306 with 5mm foam backing in my garage sim, and the NP50 in my basement putting green. There are a number of good turfs out there. The key is knowing the application and install technique best suited for the turf. The NP50 is a great premium turf and rolls down and lays nice. I went with the PL 306 in my garage sim because I wanted to reach a certain height and then cut out an area to recess my hitting mat for a flush finish. If I was just butting the turf up to my hitting mat and filling the space I would have gone with the NP50. It putts great and lays down perfect.

One tip, don’t buy until you see the turf or a sample to make sure it is what you want. I got a number of samples before buying.

    Good luck!

I built a platform out of 2x4s, OSB and 1/4" anti-fatigue mat. I detailed the process in this thread: https://golfsimulatorforum.com/forum...imulator-build

I was thinking about something like this piece. Has anyone used this type of grass? I just need something to reduce the bounce.

For those in Canada, I was thinking of something like this for my build to help reduce bounce as well.
if need you can also add  foam pads underneath.

I have a garage simulator that is not setup all of the time. I just wanted something that looked turf-like and would keep balls from bouncing all over the garage. I bought this stuff and I'm very happy with it:

It was priced for $2 per square foot, but I got it on sale for .89 cents per square foot, a total bargain. It looks like this might be discontinued now, but you can find a product like this one all over the place. This turf is 6 feet wide and I got 2 pieces that are 16 feet long. I just roll them out next to each other whenever I set up the simulator. So, it gives me a turf area that is 16ft wide and 12 feet back from the screen. With tax, I think it was just over $200 bucks, totally worth it because it makes the simulator look so much better and it keeps balls from bouncing around on the concrete garage floor.

I hit from about 9 feet from the screen so it's a nice big area of turf in between me and the screen. If I could buy it over again, I might look for a product that is 12 feet wide instead of 6 so I would only have to roll up one piece of turf whenever I park cars in the garage. However, that would be a giant, heavy piece of turf and I'm not sure where I would store it in my garage. It's no big deal to store two 6 foot rolls on a shelves in the garage. I would cover the largest amount of square footage on the floor as your budget and storage space allows.

It takes no time at all to grab it off the shelf and roll it out directly on the garage floor. I mark where the corners go with Sharpie on the concrete so that it's in the same place every time. I don't use any mats underneath it because that would add to the setup time. It lays down flat in no time. Like everything else, it depends on your situation.

Anyhow, It works great and balls hardly bounce on it. I don't putt on this turf, but you could. It looks great, particularly when the garage lights are off and just using the lights in the simulator and the light from the screen. I actually run the vacuum over it occasionally to keep it looking even better. A year later, it's still working great.

If you are just looking for something to keep balls from bouncing everywhere, I don't think you need to spend 4 or 5 bucks per square foot on a high end putting green product.

I used cheap turf I got from Lowes and put foam mat's I got from Harbor Freight under it. I originally only did half the garage then months later decided to do the other half and I didn't match up the color that great but it doesn't bother me. It's a garage after all. Each piece is 8' x 12' and cost about $45 so $90 total for the turf. I believe it was about $60 more for the foam mat's. It seems to be holding up well. FYI, if you do get the mat's from Harbor Freight, check to make sure you get each pack of 4 from the same lot. I had different lot #'s and they were not cut the same size. Poor quality control. Some were 1/2" different. They sell these mat's elsewhere but for much more from what I saw.

I'm going through the same debate as my portable setup is in the garage. I was at Menards today and this "turf" is pretty inexpensive but relatively thick. I"m going to order a 12x15 piece to go from screen to end of my 5x5 hitting mat.

                - Foxford Hills Golf Club - Lidar

                - Cary Country Club - Lidar

How do you like the inexpensive turf from Menards? At $0.61 per square foot, I can do my area for about $100. Putting accuracy would be nice, but I'm not too concerned since I have a dedicated putting mat to use. I basically want something that looks green and will not be too bad to use for the few inches that are needed with the ProTee putting sensor.

Really wish there was a Menards type store here in western Canada. It looks like there are some great inexpensive options.
