  • Which mat do I have?

    Hi,

I bought a used mat (and Net Pro Return) from Craigslist and the guy didn't know what the actual brand / model of the mat - only that it was expensive and from the local country club. Does anyone know what brand it could be? I think it's a CCE, but not certain.

Here's some additional info and attached photos:
    • 5'x5', thick (~1.5"-2" total) and heavy (~30-40 lbs)
    • Has a yellow ID tag in the corner
    • Can insert real tees
    • Deep / thick turf density - my left wrist is pretty sore from just hitting 60-70 balls yesterday
    • Turf (nylon?) pieces break off after every hit. There's a noticeable amount of it next to my mat from the 60-70 shots
    • Leaves a thick layer of turf residue on the soles of my clubs (but comes off after soaking in soapy water) - this was the attribute that confused me as I saw most people reported no residue from their CCE mat. Maybe this was because he left his mat outside for 2 years?
    Thanks!
    Lu

The yellow tag makes it sound like a Tartan Turf brand mat. I use their GT Plus model but I changed out the hitting surface. The Tartan fairway turf is pretty punishing and could hurt your elbow after extended use.

Hey Grant, thanks for the quick reply. Never heard of that brand before, but looking at the website, it definitely looks similar to their Country Club Tee Mat.

The other thing I should have mentioned is that small turf (nylon?) pieces break off after every hit. There's a noticeable amount of it next to my mat from the 60-70 shots I took.

When you were hitting off the Titan Turf directly, did it leave turf marks on your club soles?

Sounds like the mat just needs to be broken in a bit, the shards of turf are nothing to worry about unless it gets noticeably worst. I don't remember having an issue with the turf transferring to the sole of my clubs but wouldn't surprise me. Like I mentioned be careful hitting too much off this mat.

Thanks Grant! Mystery solved here I think. The yellow tag actually says "DERONE" on it. A Google search and some browsing later, I found this:

Derone Thrasher was the name of the owner / found I believe. Thanks!

In case anyone else is interested in these Thrasher champion mats:

After a few days of hitting iron shots in the same spot and getting a lot of green residue under my clubs, it looks I've finally "broken in" that part of the mat and there is now almost no turf marks under my clubs and the mat is softer in that location. Looks like it just needed to be broken in...
