  • Need feedback on StarPro MPT vs. Mirage putting green

I'm building a custom indoor putting green and trying to decide what turf to use. I have read a lot of posts, reviews, etc. and it seems to me the best putting surfaces are StarPro and Mirage (used by ProPutt Systems and Tour Links).

I got a sample of the StarPro turf and although it looks nice, it seems "crunchy" meaning there is an audible crunch sound when the turf is compressed. It was literally the first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box. Is this something that eventually goes away once the turf gets broken in?

Would also love to hear from anyone who has compared the two putting surfaces. My Mirage sample from ProPutt should be arriving soon...

In case anyone was wondering, I received samples of both. The "grass" appears to be exactly the same. It looks the same, feels the same, and the ball rolls the same.

The only difference I can tell is the bottom/backing. The sample I received from ProPutt is backed with a white mesh that is a bit rough. The StarPro sample is backed with a pretty smooth black rubber surface that has some texture to prevent sliding.

All in all, I would say the StarPro is superior. Their backing doesn't slide on my wood floor while the ProPutt does. The StarPro also just seems like a nicer backing that will let the turf lay flat better.

Oh yeah, and the StarPro is also a bit cheaper. I was looking for a 4' x 12' piece. Both are sold in 15' lenghts. StarPro will cost $329 including shipping. ProPutt is $427.
