  • DIY Gel Mat - This is the combination you want to get!

So like a few of the other threads on here for your own custom Gel Mat, I went ahead and took a shot at making my own. I feel like it's the perfect combo of price/durability. In the other threads that discuss the DIY Gel Mat, they've had issues of the mat bubbling up/ripping in the hitting area, etc. I've had this combination for half a year now, and it still looks/performs like new. Here is what I used:

$12 - 8x4 OSB 19/32 board - I cut it down to 4x5, and then jigsawed out the 9x16 hold for the Gel. The height of the 19/32 works ALMOST perfectly, the gel pushes up the mat maybe 1cm, if that. You want it to be right up against the mat though to make sure it's not tearing apart the mat.

$90 - The Mat - 4x5 Dura Pro Plus - this mat I feel like is the best as it has a pretty thick padding that won't rip even if you have fat shots continuously. I'm a pretty good ballstriker, but still hit the occasional fat shot.

$70 - The Gel. This you cut in half to make the 9x16 gel pad for the hitting area. Again, see the other posts if you want to see how they cut this out.

    Total - $172.

As you can see in the pics, the Dura Pro mat has the thick white back padding that shows absolutely no signs of wear after thousands of shots.
How I did my install was I cut the 8x4 OSB into a 5x4 section, then jigsawed out the gel spot. I put the OSB and gel right over bare concrete in my basement, and then used a small screw on each of the 4 corners, and then a screw into each long edge between the corner screws to keep the mat attached to the OSB. I used 4 Tapcons to hold the OSB to the basement floor. I then got some quarter round and glued the ends together to go around the mat to make it look better.

The skytrak usually only has a mis-read maybe 1 out of every 100 shots. The putting on it works perfectly as well. I've had a friend bring his GC2 over and use it as well, and it works flawlessly with putting and hitting as well. I think it's the perfect combo for the DIY Gel!

Thanks for posting this. I have been wondering how people have been making their own Gel Mats.

JG, if one could find a thicker gel mat, would it be a benefit or detriment in your opinion?

Detriment if you use this exact same setup. The thickness of the OSB used makes the gel push up on the mat just barely. It's almost perfect thickness.

Wanted to revive this thread. Have you hit off a fiberbuilt mat at all? Was looking at doing abuying the dura mat in this thread and cutting out the oval for the fiberbuilt launch pad to fit in, wondering is people who have hit both the fiberbuilt and gel mat could chime in. Might be better off replicating this and selling the fiberbuilt deck.

            Thanks

I've hit off of both. Personally i would go with the FB and I would get 1x1 panels instead of the oval. I had both the oval and the squares and prefer the squares.

I already purchased the oval last month, only to discover it’s not quite the same as the squares. So I’m stuck with the oval for now

What do you like about the FB over the gel mat?

I have FB now and am considering building a custom gel mat. I think FB is great for irons but terrible for hybrids and fairway woods, they just seem to bounce right off the bristles.

This does look like the best combo as I see in Mike80’s version you have to cut out mat foam - which looks like a pain and something I would mess up.
This looks a lot cleaner and easier.

How far from the edges did you cut the hole for the gel pad?

Also, is that a pre-punched hole for a rubber tee in the mat?

About 8 inches from the edge, and yes it's a pre cut hole.

I noticed that there is a Dura Pro Commerical mat also. My mat will be outdoors and I think the commerical mat would be better for outdoor use. Does anyone have any thoughts on which mat would be better for outdoors?

Thanks for the DIY mat instructions! I took your advice and built this mat and like it a lot. The Dura Pro mat went up in price to $114 but I bought it anyway. This seems to be easier on my elbows and I can hit down on my ball and I get better distances than I got with hitting mat I had.

I bought the commercial mat with this setup and think it works well. Thanks for the idea!

Hi @JG GOLF. Great tip. I want to be sure that I understand what you've done. Below most of the 4' by 5' mat is the plywood except for the hitting area which has the gel foam below that section. Is that right? Where did you get the interlocking mat that surrounds the 4' by 5' mat? It doesn't look as if the interlocking mat is high enough to be at the same level as the 4' by 5' mat. Do you care and did you try to get something the correct total height?
