  • Mats vs. Grass differences and how about Fiberbuilt mats?

I read a blog about the difference between hitting off a mat vs. real grass - the conclusion is that the Launch Angle is higher and the Back Spin is lower when hitting off mats vs. real grass. I currently use Fiberbuilt mats and wonder if anyone has compared Fiberbilt mat with real grass on launch angle and spin. I would love to do this myself but it is too late for me and all outdoor ranges are already closed up here. Has anyone done this comparison test?

    The link I found is:

I’ve been running a new swing caddie 300 while hitting on my STrak/divot action. I have been meaning to slide my FB mat back into the hitting area too. Next time I go to an outdoor range, I’ll have some numbers for you. We had a crazy cold front come thru DFW today (it’s 31°F right now, which may as well be -30° for a Texan), so may be a week before I have a chance.

halfwau through the video he shows some comparison between real grass vs Truestrike vs Fiberbuilt.

nutshell.....FB Launched about 4-5deg higher than real grass and had around 1000 less backspin.

Excellent find! This test matches the Trackman test to conclude that Fiberbuilt mats, really all mats, will promote a higher launch angle and reduce the back spin in comparison to hitting on real grass. Therefore, it seems that nothing can replace the real grass, not even the most expensive hitting mats
