  • Best turf for putting green/stance platform?

I'm looking for a good turf to put on top of my hitting platform for my skytrak. It'll be used for the stance area and as a putting green. I'll use a fiberbuilt insert to actually hit off of. My local greens run around a 10 on the stimp meter. Any suggestions? I was looking at this TFD putting elite from turffactorydirect.com, but wanted to see if anyone had other ideas.

I had TFD send me a sample of the TFD Putting Elite and it seemed fine. I'm trying to be somewhat budget conscious, so I got a 1' x 12' strip of outdoor carpet from Lowe's and tested that out. It rolled well in my opinion, so I am giving that a shot before I spend the money on actual turf. The difference in cost for the area I am doing is around $400.

Thanks. I think I am going with the Fiberbuilt inserts, and looking for a reasonably priced stance/putting surface for the entire sim area. Did you do a subfloor?

Yeah, I’m doing 1 x’s and then putting 3/4” plywood on top of that and then putting outdoor carpet on top of plywood. It should bring it up level with the CCE hitting strips I purchased.

Would be just over 1 3/4” thick.

Sounds great, keep us posted on your experiences with the CCE mat and the putting surfce. I will using the Fiberbuilt strips, and likely the Turf Factory Direct putting surface. I was pointed to the Nylon 36 model with the attached 5mm padding. After doing the math, the attached padding comes out to be the same cost as adding carpet padding under the non-padded model. I am also trying to decide whether I should use 4x8 sheets of 2" polyISO foam from home depot, or fram out a subfloor with 2x3's and OSB. The Poly is more expensive, and will only be 2", however the framed version may be louder.

TFD Nylon 36 Padded 5mm was our first padded product on the market.  TFD Nylon 36 Padded 5mm is 36 oz. face weight and made from 100% texturized nylon.   This product is a preferred material for: sled work, batting cages, multi-purpose indoor facilities, CrossFit plus endless other opportunities.

Here’s the initial framing of the subfloor. Will keep you updated once I get everything done.

looking good. have you looked into trying to reduce the noise? I know im getting an ear full about the noise coming from the basement. I have already installed Roxul safe n sound in the ceiling.

I’m assuming I’ll need to add some sound dampener in the ceiling and wall that goes to the finished part of our basement. How has the safe n sound worked for you?

Not very effective. A marginal improvement, but not nearly enough to win the war. Next, I am going to try draping blankets behind the screen to dampen some noise, then I will move to sound panel if I need to.

Blue2Red Here is the finished floor. I am happy with the outdoor carpet I used. It did slow down a little bit once it was put on top of the subfloor compared to when I was putting on it laying directly on concrete, but it is still a good speed and rolls true. I am a little worried it may wear out quicker where I stand to hit from, so I am going to put a small section of carpet over the stance area whenever I'm hitting so I don't wear out that one spot so quickly.

jwat142 i did the same thing using marine carpeting and one it. It putts at basically a 10 stimp. It does wear the stance area a little, but honestly hasn't been an issue for me at all. Been using it for 4 months or so.

Also, my biggest issue with sound is not hitting the ball or the ball hitting the screen...it is when the ball drops onto the floor. I may have to lay some padding down when I hit because it is fairly loud when the ball drops onto the putting surface.

Experiencing the same problem with my wood sub floor. Did end up putting something down.
