Hi! Pretty new to the forums but I’ve been doing a bunch of research on mats and wanted to know what everyone thinks about my plan. I have a skytrak on the way and a 4x5’ CCE mat from a few years ago with a Ruckett net. After reading a bunch of threads it sounds like the CCE is a potential injury waiting to happen. I read Mikes DIY hitting mat thread and a handful of other threads which was a big help.
I’m planning to do the following if you can let me know your thoughts:
1. Use the CCE 4x5 mat as a stance mat and cut out (utility knife/box cutter is my plan) a 1 foot by 1 foot square about a foot off the edge of the CCE and insert a hitting strip in the cut out square.
2. I ordered a few different samples of turf to test out since it seems like there is a wide variety of opinion on which mat is best to hit off of while avoiding injury. The samples that are being shipped are:
-EZ Poly Turf from Synthetic Turf International. I contacted the folks at TXG to see what they use and this was the type they say they hit off of.
-YGT-3D
-YGT-T35
The last two were posted in other threads and seem like good options to test out without spending $300 plus dollars. Had to pay shipping costs for the 1’ x 1’ samples. Any other recommendations on turf to try getting samples of to hit off of?
3. Cut out an area on the CCE mat and place the 18” x 16” CONFORMAX ULTRAGEL Motorcycle Seat Gel listed in the DIY thread. I plan to cut that with a utility knife to 1’ x 1’ and place it below the turf.
4. If I have to raise the turf slightly to make it even with the CCE I was thinking about using a foam pad referenced in some other threads. I haven’t give this one too much though yet since I’ll have to adjust the depth depending on how much the hitting strip/mat needs to be brought up.
The way I’m looking at it is if/when the strips wear out I can order a larger replacement of whatever one works best. Not sure if I have to glue the gel/mat/foam pad together to reduce movement (ordered a gorilla grip rug gripper). Hoping the hitting strip insert won’t move if I cut it right and it sits snug in the stance mat. I should have mentioned I have to set up and breakdown the mat every time I use it.
Please feel free to pick all this apart and let me know what issues you see or anything you’d do differently to improve it. Thanks in advance!
