  • DIY - let’s update

I’ve had a Skytrak for 2 years now with CCE. I’ve read every forum about DIY truestrike and divot action. GunHoGolf has been amazing. I keep going back and forth between both strictly on DIY. I’m going to copy what GunHoGolf did with possibly both but I’m asking feedback for only DIY guys. I saw the allturfmats didn’t work too well and also they are nylon. I found all these options for a top layer. Does anyone have feedback on these. What’s the results on ball action compare/contrast? For reference I’ve had CCE for 2+ years and have a basement with 7.5 ceilings. I can swing 9iron max. I am a sweeper but with mostly all wedge shots during the winter I practice a lot and my elbows are getting sharp pains (I’m 34). During the “in season” in St Louis I don’t use it as much and love the feedback of the CCE it will give you great feedback but hitting 200+ balls a sessions is killing my elbows this winter. I’m going to go 4x5 so buying a 4x15 section will
be $200+ and I’ll have a bunch leftover.

Please only DIY golf mat people chime it and tell us what works and what doesn’t!

For my current garage build, i ordered a remnant of this: https://stdepot.com/product/pro-golf-15/ to use in my DIY divot action. It has held up extremely well as a hitting insert over 6+ months of consistent use. Literally no signs of wear.

Looks like they have a minimum 15' x 15' on the site but you may want to email them to see if they have any remnants that fit your needs. i worked with Adam to get my remnant. adam@stdepot.com

JBIER04 Here is how I setup my DIY Truestrike mat. Granted, I already had purchased a 10'x6' NetReturn Proturf mat that is only 0.75 inches thick.

This is a mat works really well as a stance mat, but is a little rough on the wrists. I tried placing the mats on 2'x2' foam tiles purchased from Harbor Freight ($9/16sqft). This worked better, but I still wanted a little softer feel. So I purchased:

      1. Foam Tiles (15 - 2'x2'x1") thick foam tiles from Amazon for about $160.

      2. Motorcycle seat Gel - 18"x16"x1"

I cut out an 18"x16" section of the center foam tile and placed the Motorcycle seat Gel into the cutout section. It fit perfectly! Then I placed the Proturf over the top of the foam tiles.
So far, it has been working extremely well!

I know it is not the cheapest DIY solution, but it has worked with what I already have and is close to the TrueStrike Academy Mat.

      Good luck!

Hoping you can give an update on this DIY solution after a few hundred swings. Curious how the turf will hold.

Will do! I usually hit about 50-60 balls a day.

richerod Here is an update after about 500 swings of mostly irons. The wedges come off the mat with normal spin (~9-10K rpm with a SW) , and so far no wrist or elbow pain.

I was reading in some other posts of the mat getting a bubble, but so far this mat and gel is holding up very well.

dvbeach This looks to be a solid solution. Thank you for sharing. Looks like turf is holding up. How is it putting? What LM are u using? Are you putting off the gel area?

richerod My current LM is a Mevo+ set at 8' behind the hitting (gel) area. I purchased 2 of the 6'x10' NetReturn ProTurf mats and put them back-to-back for a smoother transition as the ball moved across the mats, and to maintain a level surface for the Mevo+. There is a very small hop when the ball crosses the transition point, but other than that the ball rolls smooth across the mats, so the Mevo+ is able to lock on to the ball. I usually play 10' gimmes, and have been very successful getting putts 12'-30' to read. I have also been able to read 5' putts with the Mevo+ on the practice green (most of the time).

Oh, the other thing I wanted to mention: With this DIY setup, it will also be very easy to transition to a Divot Action type mat. The gel can be replaced with a piece of Lexan elevated at the front and back with some of the cut foam. I haven't tried it yet, but I will update you when I do.
