Hi all. First time post, but long time reader.... I’m finally taking the plunge and putting together my first simulator setup, and I’d love to get some input from your collected experience and wisdom.
I've got two questions on mats:
1. Fiberbuilt introduced their Performance Turf Tee Boxes earlier in 2020. For anyone who has one of these mats, can you share any opinions, especially in comparison to FB's Studio mat? I was originally leaning towards the tried and true Studio Mat with the grass hitting strip, but I do like the idea of a mat that may more realistically simulate the firm/tighter lies I commonly face on the courses I play. FB seems to be marketing the Performance Turf Tee Boxes as a firmer alternative to the grass strip, but retaining more soft feel than the super hard mats that people say cause injuries. Also curious if this Performance Turf Tee Box is actually the exact same base and turf that makes up the stance mat area on the Studio Mat?
2. I believe that Fiberbuilt only sells combo hitting/putting mats in square/rectangular configurations, which doesn't fit my space perfectly, so I'm thinking of getting a FB putting green separate from my hitting mat. I'd like to be able to putt from my hitting mat onto that putting green. If I place that putting green immediately just in front of my hitting mat, I’m concerned that having two mats right up against each other will create issues due to the rubber raised edges on the outside pieces of the FB modular base system. I would think that putts might bounce as they hit those edges (there may be something like a half-inch gap between the turf strips even when the bases are pushed up flush against each other) and could effectively limit my useable putting square footage to just the putting green. I thought about trying to create my own combo mat, but Fiberbuilt told me that they don’t sell the modular rubber base pieces individually (I figured out how to do it, but would need to get a few different base pieces without edges). Has anyone else had issues on the transition from hitting mat to separate putting mat? Or does a gap that small between turf surfaces not have any effect on the way putts roll?
