  • How do I setup Fiberbuilt for going back and forth from rough to fairway? (& sand)

Would someone please explain to me how you setup your mat and what you do for when you want to play sim golf courses and hit from rough when you're in the rough and sand when in you're in the sand.

I'm getting the GC Quad so my hitting area is the standard 14"x14". I'm getting the 7'x4' Fiberbuilt Studio Mat so I'll have the option of purchasing the 12"x12" rough and sand sections.

Do I remove a fairway section whenever needed and swap it out with the rough? How time consuming is this?
If I do it like this, do I need to also remove some sort of spacer insert that I've built into my hitting mat to compensate for the approximate 1" difference in height between Fiberbuilt rough vs fairway?
Do I cut out a section of the stance mat and permanently insert rough and sand sections into this extra cutout? This doesn't seem like a great solution since each section is 12" wide and the hitting area for the Quad is only 14".
Do I permanently remove two sections of fairway grass and put down the rough and sand in their place? This doesn't seem like a solution to me again since the hitting window is only 14".

What have others done for this? I don't want to sacrifice the realism of being stuck in the rough and constantly be playing every shot from fairway grass, there must be a way...

Par2Pro has these sizes listed for each insert:
    12x12x1-3/4 Fairway
    12x12x 2-7/8 Rough
    12x12x 2-7/8 Sand

I don't think too many people bother with it. I occasionally see a setup with a rough insert. I don't think I've ever seen a setup with a sand insert. I think the very same issue you describe -- not having a big enough viewing area for the launch monitor -- has at least something to do with it.

On TGC you're given distance penalties for light rough, heavy rough, sand, pine straw and cart paths. So if you're 150 yards from the pin in the heavy rough, the shot will play 171 (14% add on for heavy rough). So you're still just hitting from the same surface but the lie penalty is factored in for you.

I have played with shots from these sand and rough sections at a commercial sim. My opinion (and it is only that) is that it doesn't really provide the realism you might be seeking. Yes there is more material there and you can get a wedge under the ball but it is not the same feeling as moving the layer of sand. Even at the commercial sim we stopped using them pretty quickly. When I built my own sim, while I went with FB, I did not bother with the additional sections. Also, I think it would be very intrusive having to move either the section (very time consuming IMO) or the Quad - easy - just a bit of a PITA - back and forth. My two cents.
