I have a backyard setup and was thinking about making a 1x3 wood frame out of 2x4 and filling it with dirt to hit off of. I feel like this is as close as I can get to hitting off grass, without actually hitting off grass. Has anyone done this before?

I think you'll find that this would be a tremendous pain in the ass. I have a net in the back and occasionally hit a shot or two off the grass behind my mat. The thing with a mat is that you can just run out there and hit some balls with no fuss. If you were hitting off dirt you'd have to not only clean your club after every shot but also fix your divot. Nevermind if you get a little rain, you'll be hitting out of a mud pit. If it's really dry out you'll be hitting out of a dust bin. Do yourself a favor and get a decent mat.
