Roll up landing area

Curious if anyone has a landing mat area that rolls up for storage and if so what they use..would a turf rug on top of a heavy duty carpet pad be enough padding for golf balls coming off a net or screen? what if you had a base layer of EVA foam tiles underneath? (My guess is the tiles, even if adhered to the surface would not roll up).

other option is building the landing pad so it can be leaned up against a wall when not in use, but that would still take up a lot of space. If I could put a rolled up mat on a pulley system, it would leave the most space for activities!

This lift is what I purchased to roll up the turf and store it on the ceiling. Using some sort of carpet dolly would make it easy to roll into place. The weight of a 10x10ft roll I think was about about 125lbs.

I had the same issue. I decided to get landscape grass from Home Depot for $170. I think its 6 X 7.5, I roll it up when I am done. Works perfectly.

Thank you for the replies…I found a video of a set up I am trying to replicate that I like a lot. basically just a gym tile base with the mat rolled over it. I can then roll up the turf and store when not in use. I am trying to save money on turf by using grizzly grass for covering the landing area though. I have two thoughts for that: 1)mount on foamular (rigid insulation boards) then just lean against wall when not in use (would make an 8x8 area with two boards. Or 2) adding some type of pliable backing to the grizzly grass to add weight (rug pad, neoprene, rubber, etc.)

finding a suitable backing has proven difficult and I may go the foamular route. all in cost would be about $90 for an 8x8 landing area. that is substantially cheaper than any roll up turf. Then I will just buy a 4-5 foot roll to turf for hitting area on top of foam gym tiles with DIY divot action hitting strip. I know it won’t look as good with two different types of turf, but it saves a lot of money. I can slide the turf landing boards above on a rafter space when not in use also.

I am finalizing my buildout. This is the best solution I found for a roll up sub floor for under the turf. This is the only company that has a 1" roll up wrestling style mat. These are great, easy to roll and store. I own 2 for martial arts, they are very stiff and and not squishy. They are also light weight. There a a lot of companies that make them. Most are 1.25-2" thick. The Dollamur is the only company that has a 1" thick roll. Which is perfect for the Money Putt/Holy Grail combo to make a seamless transition from hitting mat to screen.

The thing I am concerned about for my setup is how hard will be it be roll a 15x17 area up.... it is going to be about 200 lbs is what I estimate, let alone if both the foam mat and turf are rolled together how wide is that roll going to be? With straps and the rollers I think it is more then doable.

The foam mat on its own would be fine if you aren't worried too much about putting. I used it as a temp solution while my garage was being renovated. If you are local to New England I have 2 of the mats I am not going to use anymore I would be willing to sell on the cheap.

One thing to consider, if you are making all of this portable you are probably not able to just lay in a hitting strip because it is going to move around every time you hit it, unless you velcro or glue it to your other mat. You need to purchase a pre made divot action stance mat or look at the Holy Grail mat.

I am going to purchase the 4x9 Holy Grail stance mat which can be secured with Velcro to the garage floor, then use the roll out mat and Money Putt on top.

Just get shaggy artificial grass to stop the ball from bouncing or rolling. There shouldn't be a need for heavy padding when you have a thick shaggy rug.

I leave this down in my concrete garage floor and park on top of it. Now, if you want to putt... that's a different issue.

Yeah, I want to putt on mine. Where I am at now is a diy stance mat, 12x4’ with a diy divot action/holy grail…with money putt turf…you will save a good $200 going diy route and you can buy your own Velcro to adhere it to the floor to keep it in place if needed. You will also have 3’x4’ remnant to make either replacement turf for the diy strip (so you can renew it) a backup (for a quick swap) and/or a “lily pad” for the Launch monitor to sit on so it is level with the hitting area if using a radar based device behind the ball. Right now my putting “turf” is grizzly grass on top of carpet pad, it will match up perfectly level to the money putt on top of 1” foam mats 1 3/8” total height. (Note I had to use 3/4 foam mats for the putting area to make it level. Grizzly grass is okay…but I think I needed more carpet tape and I would order the carpet pad wider than necessary so you can trim it exact…they botched it pretty bad at menards. If you do that I think you could get it pretty flat without bumps. And it otherwise rolls well. I may switch to a different turf with 5/8” like height if the diy turf gives me too much headache, but this is a good cheap starting point.

Just an aside - you're not supposed to put the radar units on a pedestal because the "valley" might cause some Doppler interference.

The suggestion for the shaggy artificial grass is for the area left and right of your putting surface. I only putt down the left side of my stationary putting mat. Do you have to clear the space everytime you finish playing?

bubbtubbs Thanks. I understand that. I realize now “lily pad” might not be the best word choice since it suggests that it might be unconnected from the main piece, but I heard the term used before and did not think of that connotation. I meant attaching a strip behind for the unit to sit on. I would think if it is 2’ wide and gets you to 6’-7’ behind ball it should be good and eliminate The Valley.

I ordered the Holy Grail stance mat, Money Putt Turf, and the 1" roll up foam for the sub floor, so everything from the stance mat to the screen will be seamless. By ordering through Dollomur they were able to have the Money Putt cut to order, so I do not need to deal with cutting the turf in a straight line. It was much more expensive then I anticipated for the project. However, I need it to be 100% portable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. It is going to be awesome. Turf and foam will be 12 x 16 1/2 feet, and the 4x9 stance mat behind that. Turf will stick behind the screen a foot or so.
