  • Absolute best turf for hitting strip

Can I get some opinions on the best overall turf to use over top of some lexan for a hitting strip? I have used the precision putt from SynLawn, but it's bubbled up quite easily (what I mean is the rubber backing like gets stretched on some pieces and bubbles up). I see people using GrassTex MoneyPutt and special ordering it. How about either of the below GrassTex links, which are actually order-able right on Menards website, not sure of the difference except the 2nd one looks like it has some thicker white foam backing:

    GrassTex Pro Putt - https://www.menards.com/main/floorin...3078526&ipos=5

    GrassTex Pro Putt - https://www.menards.com/main/floorin...3078526&ipos=7

Thanks for any advice/ideas yall can offer.

Pro putt is only 1/4 inch. Money Putt is 3/8. The one with the backing, what would that look like with the amount of shear force its going to take.

allen2be - I would recommend you check out the GrassTex website at: https://grass-tex.com/products/ (click on Golf & Putting Greens on left).

I have 10'x15' piece of Club Champion, which I use for my entire area, and I'm going to embed a stance mat for stance area, and hitting strips.

I think Holy Grail hitting strip uses Money Putt turf on it. You're right though, there are many options - and finding the most durable is the hardest. Do a search up here, you're sure to find several DIY hitting strip posts. I bought a few cheap 12"x24" pieces of turf that I may try out as hitting mat, but for me, I have to protect wrists and elbows, so Fiberbuilt is likely going to be my hitting mat of choice.

I'm surprised you're having issues with the Synlawn stuff. I don't think I have the pro putt version, but I do use their turf. Have probably hit a couple thousand shots so far with no issues. What'd you use to adhere it?

Yeah, maybe it was just a couple bad spots in the rubber-backing, because I have one mat (I have about 8 mats that HS kids are using) that has held up really well, but the full 4x4 mat is all synlawn precision putt turf. I've just been trying to save money and make strips and it hasn't went well.

For making strips I've tried adhering the turf to the lexan with a few different things, which has been an issue as well .. carpet tape, liquid nails (that wasn't smart), 3M spray adhesive. Next try was going to be some Flex Tape, but then I worry that might not come off the lexan ever haha.

I did check on the turf, mine is Synlawn but a different version (multi-use version from Lowes). When I did my test hitting strip, I used a heavy duty tape. Which didn't work well. Ultimately used liquid nails fuze-it max. Yes, it makes it permanent, but it holds REALLY well. My 5 year old has struck the edge/corner a couple times and it hasn't separated.

If you want the turf to be removable, that's really the challenge. Anything that's removable/replaceable is more likely to bubble/delaminate. I'd argue you'd be better served by just accepting you may need to swap out a hitting strip every once and while. And just go with a premium construction adhesive like I used.

With that being said, it does pay to go with a quality turf. As that would hopefully extend the time between replacements.

As far as my stance mat, I used the same turf. But I didn't adhere it. Instead I used a cordless crown stapler. My base is 3/4" melamine. So that may or may not be a viable attachment method for others. But it's also held up really well.

I think that's the one place I didn't check was Lowes, so I'll have to do that. I'll also have to check out the fuze-it liquid nails. Thanks for the ideas!

Ya, if I do go with a strip, I might just eat the cost of the lexan once in awhile when the turf gets bad. Pretty cheap stuff if I'm not replacing it all the time.

Going to Menards today to see if they'll special order the MoneyPutt from GrassTex like other people have had luck with, but I'm going to check Lowe's first just in case they have something that looks decent that's in stock.

        Thanks PG50 !!

You're welcome! Even if you had to replace them once a year (which isn't all that likely) the cost of the lexan isn't all that much. And worth it over the potential headaches of having turf bubble or delaminate. The turf I got from Lowes was a "special" order. Really just something they don't carry in stores and had to be ordered online. Only took a couple days to get to my local store. Comes in 15' lengths. Pretty reasonable price.

If you're going to try the Liquid Nails, I'd highly recommend the Fuze It Max. If you need something to stick, and are working with different materials, it's the top tier adhesive.

Will be interested to hear if Menards will special order the Money putt turf. I'd considered that, but ultimately gave the Synlawn stuff a shot.
