  • DIY hitting mat question

Thinking about building a 4x8 hitting mat to put my hitting strip in that I recently ordered. Does anyone have any recent builds they could share and things that they used?

I’ve seen some where they have used plywood layered with foam, then some rubber matting on top and outdoor grass to finish but I’m wondering how heavy that may be (I tear down my area when I’m done using)

I’ve also read that some will just use foam pads then lay outdoor grass material on top, but I’m wondering if that foam padding would wear down pretty quickly without the plywood.

Anything you’ve done or any insight you have would be greatly appreciated.

I built my stance mat on top of 3/4" melamine. Mainly because I had a bunch laying around (free!). Stapled the turf right on top of the melamine with a cordless crown gun. Well, I did put a thin layer of subfloor padding I had leftover from our hardwood install. But it frankly isn't needed.

Now a 4'x8' sheet of that (or plywood) would be HEAVY. I built my stance mat and hitting strip/area in separate parts. As I too want to be able to easily move it out of the way. It's plenty manageable to pick up and move. And having used melamine as the base, it's super rigid for just leaning up against a wall.

There's a thread on my build, if you didn't already see it...

TL;DR - Jump to supplies and construction if you don't want the background/testing. After recently discovering I've got enough ceiling clearance to hit balls inside, I've set out to work my way towards a SIM. Started with a basic 10' x 7' net and needed a mat. While the cost savings is nice, I personally enjoy DIY work and
