I believed I saw someone here who had put styrofoam and some thinner wooden board under the grass, but now I can't find it.

I am curious as well. I am planning on 1.5” foam board insulation panels with 1/2” carpet pad on top, then my putting turf. I have a 2 3/8” hitting strip and would like for everything to be flush and level. -
I just did this in my basement sim. I used 1" foam board insulation, 1/2" foam puzzle tiles, and turf on top. I have a fiberbuilt hitting insert and this works great.

Hey guys... what you're looking for is Foamular, but that goes under the subfloor (covering concrete), and then I have underlayment over that with the 1/2" foam puzzle tiles, then turf.
You can see pics (of Foamular 150 - I think it was 3/4" thick as that is what I used for floor joists 3/4" thick laid on it's side) and follow my entire build here:

(you will have to look up a local 'carpet store' that sells putting turf. I found one, and got a pretty good deal, 10'x16' (with padding on it) for around $690 I think.
Grass-Tex also makes 'Money Putt' which some like. I've not compared the two laid out, the carpet store I found was out of Money Putt at the time of my order.
