Hi guys first time poster, long time lurker on this forum. Have finally bit the bullet and purchased some turf for my garage floor which is concrete. Been looking through the forums and can’t decide what subfloor to use. I have the option of 20mm and 40mm EVA gym tiles. Just wondering what kind of speeds I can expect with using EVA on top of concrete, and which thickness to pick. Would ideally like to go with the 40mm and my turf is 12mm so I could try pop in some 2inch holes to make it realistic. Any suggestions or ideas on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys

I am in Australia so i am pretty limited to turf selections. I purchase a turf that’s 1/2 inch thick designed as a putting surface. I wanted to order money putt but nobody would ship it internationally. Any tips for keeping the turf at a good speed? Appreciate all the advice on here guys thanks again

From your first post it sounds like you haven't putted on your turf yet? As far as my turf goes I added cork and foam for 2 reasons and neither was the turf speed. First, it was to level it up to the hitting mat and secondly, to create depth that would allow me to add a putting cup. I have read where guys mention adding sand to the turf to up the speed but man that sounds messy.

Have you tried just laying the turf directly on the concrete? Not sure what putting interlocking tiles under the turf will accomplish other than making it bumpy. Have you looked at any Big Moss putting strips? https://bigmoss.com/ Not as cheap, but they make a great product.

I wouldn't judge the foam on itself, the turf on top of it takes most of the weight as long as it's supported properly and is a large enough surface area. I used the 2' x 2' x 1" foam tiles and taped all seams so as not to create any ruts and I couldn't be happier. What are you hitting off of? I would start there and build up to that, you can add cups by cutting them down so you don't need full depth. My base is just under 1.5" to match my hitting mat so I could putt right off of there and to a cup that I cut down on a table saw.

If you build a frame of 2x4’s but with the 2x4’s flipped from how you build a wall, and then put 1” plywood on top of that you’ll have a 2” base. Then mount your turf on top of that. Depending how thick your turf is, you could go with 3/4” ply and still get 2” for the cups. If you vacuum the putting surface a lot it can slightly speed up the stimp but it is minimal. I think the sanding technique is typically used outdoors. I doubt in Aus you’re troubled by particularly cold concrete, but if you are, you can put hard insulation between the “studs”.

So i just purchased TFD putt elite turf. Im leveling my garage floor with some sheets of layered 1/8 foam underlayment(used under laminate flooring). Atop that i will have 1/2" eva mats and then 7/16 osb wood followed by turf. Although i am considering switching that order and having the wood, then eva mats, then turf atop that. Ill be doing 4x8ft boards of the leveled underlayment, osb, and gym mats adhered together for ease of moving, then rolling the turf over. Hoping i dont need to adhere turf... it seems to lie pretty flat as it is. Otherwise maybe i use something to temporarily afix turf to board along edges.
I am wondering what yall think of the tradeoffs of the wood or eva mat directly under the turf. I worry that gym mat directly under turf is too squishy. Could always have wood under turf in stance section though instead of gym mat. Will be cutting out section for holygrail strip. Sounds like gym mat or wood underneath will not impact stimp speed.
I really just only wanna do this once, so hoping to learn from everyones experience.
Thanks!!!
