  • In Search of Roll Up Turf (Concerned About Seams)

    Hey all,

I'm in the process of building a budget garage sim. I would like to add some turf for a landing zone and also around the hitting mat for aesthetics, cozy up the place a little.

I need to be able to roll it up though so it's out of the way when sim is not in use.

Area is about 10' wide and 19' long

My question and concern is about seams. I have my eye on the TrafficMaster putting turf from HD @ 1.82 sq. ft. but it's only 6' wide. I'll have to seam the two 19' long pieces together. I know permanent installs get seams all the time, but I have no experience with this process. If I'm rolling this mat up and out twice a week, how long is that seam going to last? A day? A month? A year?

I also wonder how horizontal seams would last. Ones that are perpendicular to the rolling direction.

Any insight would be really helpful! Thank you!

I'm in Colorado and they sell it as 12' width, cut to length. You might want to check some other HDs around you:

It looks like that's the fescue at 12' wide. I was referring to the putting turf which I only see in 6' wide. Thanks though. I might just get the 12' wide fescue to avoid any trouble with seams.

GolfBaller01234 I looked at this many times when considering putting turf, but I finally came to the conclusion it wasn't worth saving a few dollars to end up with a solution that I wasn't sure would last, or that would not roll the ball like a real putting turf.

I ended up going down to a local Carpet Installer that also sold turf and had them order me Grass Tex Club Champion. There were several good things that came from this. 1.) the installer did not bill me for delivery and I picked up the huge roll (12' wide) in my Mini Van with it hanging out the back. 2.) I originally asked for 9' wide and changed it to 10' wide which caused them to hot-melt the additional 1' onto the width and it feels like a fringe area in my simulator. 3.) By the time I was done, I think it was around $800 for a 10'x15' piece. 4.) the installer gave me a link to someone that could come and move the huge roll around and at least get it laid into my shed.

Just wanted to let you know so you could consider that option... Here's a link to my Sim Build post where I show the installation of the turf:
Hi Everyone, I'm starting this post as a way to keep myself accountable. The tasks are huge, but not insurmountable as I'm having to do all my build work by myself. Contractors are either non-existent in this post-pandemic marketplace, or they have so much work they are 3 months out! I'll be posting up here as I make

        Good luck with your build,
        -Brett

Looks awesome, thank you for sharing. Unfortunately, I'm on a very tight budget.

GolfBaller01234 - I understand, but I highly recommend you do not cut corners in the flooring or the hitting mat. They will provide the longest and best value for the money.

Good luck, let us know what you go with.

Hitting mat, I think I went medium quality and got a Rawhide. I know it's not the best, but I can always upgrade in the future.
        Working...
