I've got a 25'x12' space on the side of my yard that I'd like to make into an outdoor hitting area. my initial thought was just going to be a hitting net, stance mat (4x5) with a HG or similar insert. would need to be removable, etc.. as I don't see myself leaving it out in the Texas weather but I can manage that. Then I got to thinking of putting artificial turf over the entire 25x12 space and then just place the stance mat and net in place when needed. Would also look to incorporate the Garmin R10. I don't see myself using the other space as a putting green but perhaps that's short-sighted. We have a Synlawn here in DFW that I was going to look at.
Turfing the 25x12 space is largely about aesthetics and keeping weeds under control but it obviously needs to drain well.. I don't mind the manual labor to save some $$ in terms of laying down a compacted base layer, laying the turf, etc..
So I think I'm either looking at a landscape type of turf to cover the 25x12 and then just place the stance mat on top when I want to hit some balls.. or making the 25x12 more golf-friendly (large putting green?) and placing the stance mat on top as needed when hitting balls into the net.
I'm guessing the landscape turf option is going to be quite a bit cheaper but wanted to elicit some feedback here. I should note that this will be over underground pool plumbing but I'll deal with that if the need to repair were to ever arise.
