  • thoughts on inserting putting cups on putting surface

    Hi All,

I have my simulator setup on my rooftop balcony and am planning on installing 13 mm astroturf on top of the 22 mm plastic tiles on top of the balcony. I will then have two 30x90 cm cutouts so that I can insert my 35 mm tall hitting strips when I set up the net and simulator. My balcony is a pretty decent size (3.5 x 6 meters) and I would like to also install some putting cups so that I can practice putting even if I don't have the simulator set up. I bought some shallow (28 mm) putting cups from One Stop Sim Shop and was going to see about installing those since this is a rooftop balcony and I can't make them any deeper. I also found some even more shallow metal cups but they are solid. See pictures of both below.

If I went for the metal cups, I would only need to cut the hole in the astroturf and wouldn't have to cut into the tiles. However, since these are solid metal, rain would collect and stand in the cups until they were dried out and I have a feeling that they may also eventually rust (I am confirming what material they are now). For those reasons, I would really prefer to use shallow plastic cups. Does anyone have experience with these shallow plastic cups from One Stop Sim Shop? Will the ball actually stay in the cup or will it lip out pretty easily?

My question for you DIY'ers out there is, what would be the best way to cut these tiles so that the cups would fit in neatly without completely destroying the tiles? There are two parts to the tiles (the top part and the bottom grid) that are attached together by screws. I suspect that I could use some kind of hand saw to cut these but I am wondering if anyone has any advice on what kind of saw would cut these really cleanly. It doesn't really have to be perfect since the turf will go over it anyway.

    Appreciate everyone's advice.

I would suggest taking your time with a hole saw.

Hey sirish19 - I think Paul has a video, or some help on cutting those holes on the OneStopSimShop website, nope it's gone... I have a hole saw I believe... or I think there is a hole cutter available at Birdie Ball (maybe)?

Thanks guys. The guy who is going to install the turf is going to make a go at cutting the holes for me. I am sure he'll do a better job than I would, we'll see.

I would use something like this: Milwaukee Tool 3-1/2 in. Hole Dozer Bi-Metal Hole Saw | The Home Depot Canada

sirish19 - if I remember right, you might want to contact Paul at OneStopSimShop: https://onestopsimshop.com/ , because he had a very certain way of cutting those holes so they were perfect all the way around - especially with taking the turf off first - if you have that issue (which I do).

I looked in my notes and saw that I had used this Cut-Out tool from Harbor Freight, along with a Jig Saw that I had to make cuts in my 3/4" wood floor overlay:

It worked ok, and way better than one of those smaller mini-circ saws that kicked back so hard I nearly injured myself.

Here is that 3.5" hole saw available at Amazon:

I think I might go with that... not sure yet.

            Good luck,
            -Brett

Well, I finally got my turf installed and ended up putting 4 cups in, two of the metal cups from the place that put the turf in and two of the shallow cups from One Stop Sim Shop. The guys who put them in ended up just cutting out a whole square from the tiles and filled the area around the cup with packing material. That seems to be working pretty well so far. I think I much prefer the shallow cups from One Stop Sim Shop as it does allow water drainage and they seem to stop the balls pretty well. I wish I had gotten a few more to spread around the surface.

                Here's how things turned out.

Haha, I am actually a lefty. This is a new net return (the 10-foot wide large version) as I was previously using the older version at 8 feet wide. I did actually hit a shank that ricocheted off the left pipe and went flying over the balcony. Fortunately, no one was injured (and no one noticed). I did buy the side barriers (not shown in the photo) and connect to a tall pole on my balcony just to make sure there are no stray balls flying around.
