  • Foam board without EVA tiles

Does anyone have any expertise or advice with using 1” foam board under turf and Not using the EVA tiles? The turf I bout has a 5mm backing so shouldn’t move.

What turf do you have ?
I have Synthetic-Turf NP45 ( which is quite thin ) sitting directly on my concrete floor, and I’m impressed with its bounce reduction of balls coming off my screen. I have no need for any subfloor / foam tiles.

I thought about that too, but went with the eva tiles.
With the foam board (insulation board) I was worried about getting indents in it from walking to hard or if something heavy was put on it, or what not. I have this in my garage, so you never know. The eva tiles work great and I don't worry about indents. To help with ball bounce, I also did a layer of carpet padding on the tiles, and then laid the turf. It's cheapie home Depot turf, but works fine for the sim.

My hitting area is 3 sections of framed out 1x1 with foam board in the gaps of the frame. It has 1/4" plywood then the turf. I don't have padded turf, so I cut in a hitting strip, which was super easy to make. I might recommend a hitting strip over hitting on 5mm padded turf directly on top of the insulation board. I think that would definitely damage the board and give you and uneven hitting surface. I can't say if the 5mm padding will stop the insulation board from denting when you swing and roll onto the outside of your foot etc, but 1/4 inch plywood stops that.

I've hit several thousands of shots over the past year on mine with no issues. At some point I will probably need to replace a board, but thats super easy and cheap. i move it in and out on a dirty garage floor and it has held up as you can see in the photos - just dirty.

I am brainstorming on different ways to build up the area in front of the hitting mat. I am doing a build under a covered patio that may get some rain so I’m concerned with using untreated wood and plywood. From what I saw the foam board tiles have some water resistance but wondering if anyone else had used them outside.

I like the idea of using the foam board with plywood and turf on top as the stance mat and cutting a strip for the hitting area. This seems much more economical than a whole mat.

The patio is right next to the pool and we have too many kids spraying water everywhere so doing a net and tv first and eventually may upgrade to screen and projector. But my initial thought was to use the hot shot 5x7 which is 1 1 3/4” with 1/2” tiles under total 2 1/4”. For the area between the hitting and net would be 1.5” foam board with 1/2” tiles and then cheap turf from Home Depot.

            Any thoughts or advice?

I use foamular directly under a grass mat, between the screen and the hitting mat. I’ve used it for 5 years and it has held up well to balls and walking, lower cost than EVA, and easy to install. It has a slight give to it. There are some types of foam board that will retain water between the closed cell foam structure, so the type of insulation board matters, and foamular has higher compressive rating than other insulation boards.
My Fiberbuilt hitting mat has a type of insulation board in small sections under the stance area mat, and repeated swings have compressed it enough that I’m going to replace it with EVA tiles cut to fit.

How did you stick the turf to the foam boards?

In my application simply the weight of the grass on top of the foam board holds it in place.

Here’s a good video of a build that also uses the foam board in you tube by Triple Bogey Golf entitled Golf Simulator Flooring DIY: Build It with Foam Board, EVA/Rubber & Turf!
