Sim Remodel - cons to using putting turf exclusively with a hitting insert?

Hi All,

I'm planning a remodel of my simulator as the turf was originally designed based on an expectation that my wife would still want to park in the garage. Accordingly, the hitting mat and putting turf needed to be movable (I hope it's clear in the picture). She gave that dream up long ago so I wanted to build the turf up a little so it can be level and I can put a cup/hole in but most importantly, my ideal is to have the entire turf surface be the same. I currently hit off a country club elite hitting mat with a holy grail hitting insert.

Is there any downside to installing all putting turf and cutting out a strip for my holy grail insert?

I have the exact same setup but I have my mat set into 1” puzzle mats already so it is level but only have grizzly grass on top. I also have double depth putting cups from birdieball installed. My plan is to buy the turf from gungho and cut out for the holy grail. What you are saying will work perfect as long as you raise your floor 1”

If you install all putting turf with the holy grail hitting mat, you will have a wear pattern from where your feet are positioned. Over time, you will likely need to replace the area where you stand. Using a larger hitting area stance mat, with the insert, makes more sense in the long run. Having a stance mat that can be turned when worn would also benefit it's life (5x5 is a good size).

thanks! your setup looks great! was there any special trick to get the turf transition so smooth? that's one of my bigger gripes with my current setup is the ball hops when it hits the putting turf when putting off the hitting mat.

Thanks, I got lucky on mine and only needed to trim a bit off the holy grail for everything to line up. Before I did the whole floor I had a strip I would putt down and I used 2' wide foam maybe 1/16" thick on the edge the was against my mat to make it perfect.
