  • Landing area turf chewing up golf balls --> What to do?

Do people have problems with landing area turf placing heavy wear and tear on golf balls? If so, how do you address this? Are there landing area materials that are easy on golf balls?

I have a garage sim with a landing area with TrafficMaster, Putting Green 6 ft. Wide x Cut to Length Artificial Grass Turf from Home Depot over 1 inch exercise mats. I park on top of the landing area when my sim is not in use. This turf is chewing up my golf balls. I don't putt in the sim so I don't really need turf. Is it OK just to have exercise mats with no turf or covering? Is there another turf or covering for the exercise matts that is easy on golf balls? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Are you sure it's the turf? I have Home Depot putting grass and the balls hit the screen and gently return to me. There's no way they get affected by my turf. Maybe you're hitting the balls hundreds of times? Balls are supposedly only last 7 rounds. Deduct putting and that may be only 300 -400 shots with a wood or iron. I sometimes will hit 100+ shots a couple times a day . I usually have 5 balls in play when I'm hitting, the wear and tear adds up quickly.

I'm pretty sure that it is the turf in my case. I have a ball tray with maybe 35 or 40 balls and probably am only using the sim set up a couple times a week for say 50 or 60 shots at a time. The balls are starting to deteriorate after only being hit 5 to 10 times. My impact screen is the one that comes with the Par2Pro SportsScreen Golf Studio so I don't think the wear and tear is coming from the screen impact itself (as opposed to some of the harsher nets). As far as it being golf balls, I'm using Bridgestone e12 Contact and Nitro Crossfire balls. Also my driver swing speed is pretty average, 95 mph, so excessive speed isn't an issue (wish it was).

The one thing is that unlike you the impact from the screen isn't always gentle. Every tenth shot or so, I'll get a hard rebound. It typically comes from say a wedge that hits higher up on the screen or similar and not from a driver or hybrid that was traveling at a higher speed to begin with but hits the screen more straight on.

Spitballing here.........When I hit a wedge really high on the screen the ball bounces up from the screen and hits the ceiling (I have since put padding there) second then comes back to me. Could that possibly be your issue causing excess wear ????
