  • Advice On Outdoor Mat Build

I am, by no means, the professional in this area. First off, trying to be budget friendly. Looking to build an outdoor mat to hit into the net. I might be purchasing a launch monitor (one good for outdoors) later. I know some will say just hit off the grass. My grass grows extremely fast and thick. I am planning on a quality mat/turf. I can't afford the ones in the $300+ range. I want more than a hitting strip. I am thinking the mat/turf, linking gym tiles, anti-fatigue mat, or any combination of those items. Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm sure opinions will vary however, I have found the hitting mat to be the most important aspect of a simulator build (or any type of practice using a mat). If you intend to put in any reasonable amount of practice, a quality hitting mat is the only way to minimize the risk of injury. You could build your own mat economically and simply allow for a hitting strip insert. This would be the best way to balance cost with performance. I would highly recommend the Sigpro Softy insert. There are also a ton of you tube videos on home made hitting mats which may be of some help. Also check out the classified in this forum as good quality used hitting mats come up for sale quite often. Hope this helps.

This is what I started off with, 3/4 plywood with 3/8 carpet foam covered by Home Depot outdoor grass with a CCE strip along side.It was a pain in the ass to move, even more so if I forgot to take it in and it got wet. The next was 1” Amazon gym tiles with the same Home Depot grass glued to it with a Quattro hitting strip. If I ever come up with a grander plan for my side yard I will probably go with a stance mat from Amazon and insert a hitting strip in that so I don’t have to make sure I put it away after each use because no glue I have found as of yet holds up to the elements over a long period of time.

A pro at a local range bought these to extend his tee line: Fiberbuilt Grass Series Flight Deck with Adjustable Tee (fiberbuiltgolf.com)

He just buried them in the ground slightly for a level surface with the hitting position being normal grass. Easy solution and works great.
