  • Stance mat sliding around & hard to keep level

So before I had a sim room I had a golf room with a 16'x9' putting green ( which is now the sim room ). My issue is my stance mat ( 5'x5' CCE ) sits on top on putting green, I tried tried many method of trying to fasten to putting green ( without cutting out a 5x5 square ... Yet ) one of the reasons it's been tricky is because the green is not level and has anywhere from 1"-5" of sand underneath. I do get the point where the mat is level but after a few holes, sometimes a few shots...she starts sliding and the bubble gets pissed...feel like eventually I would like to sink the CCE mat flush with the green but there is such a discrepancy in the thickness of the two turfs and the whole sand substructure aspects. I was leaning towards fastening the CCE to plywood or something similar but I feel like that would make a very thick mat even thicker and make it more baffling of how to eventually get it flush with existing putting green turf. Calling all DYI Golf Simulator MacGyver's out there ! Other then this rather sizable issue... My room is awesome getting this worked out is a must for me

Definitely get a wood backing on it. I used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. Worked great to adhere both the the indoor/outdoor carpeting to wood and then the stance mat to the carpeting. What is under the sand? If you could build down to hard floor, do so. Then level you putting area to the stable hitting mat.

I had issues with my mat moving also. So I finally have my setup perfect. I drilled into the concrete floor and then screwed a 2 inch concrete screw into the front corners of the mat. Now it doesn't move an inch. This is important because I align my Skytrak and then don't want the mat to get offline. I also have a green line spray painted into the mat to give me direction.

I originally built a wood stand that had screws on bottom that allowed me to level it and set my Skytrak on it. But the issue was with it sitting on the short turf it was squishy and was never 100% solid. So now I have a piece of granite that is extremely heavy. This doesn't allow any give. So I balance my Skytrak on it and it's 100% level every time.

I also got tiny little machine bolts and put three on the bottom of my Skytrak to level it. Now when I set it down on the granite slab it's always level. No more messing around with it.

I'm waiting to get my protective shield and then I will glue two strips of something on the granite slab. Then I can put my Skytrak down and push into the corner of the two strips so it's always in the same spot. Then I won't even have to align my Skytrak because it will already be positioned correctly every time.

See the pics of my setup and how I secured the mats.

Mike80 In the last picture, is that some type of heater mounted near your ceiling? If so, can you give me some details on it?

Yeah, it's a Remington 5000 watt electric heater. It connects to a 220 outlet. For winter their aren't any 110 heaters that heat well enough in the winter. This thing works great! I considered gas and propane but those you have to vent. So this electric heater is the best solution. You just need to install 220 in your garage. I bought it at Menards. Think I paid around $200 for it.

          Here's a link with details:

Mike80 thanks for the reply .. I think I saw your setup when you posted something on how bizarre sim putting can be. The granite slab keeps you from sliding forward ...and what keeps it good left & right ? Your mate are onto of carpet over concrete ?What size machine screws / thread pattern are those in Skytrak ? I feel you have solved my exact problem so just want to make sure I get this right and never have to deal with sliding mat again ... Thanks again

PS we have cold winters in NY I installed a bad ass 220 heater if that poster wanted to know make/model

              Ripping3windoors:
No, the granite slab is the base I use to set my Skytrak on. The granite is very heavy so it doesn't move or have any give. Because my other base would have a little give and could be level and then if you push down it could move and not be level. This is because the other base was on my short turf covering the entire floor and wasn't heavy enough. So the granite takes care of that. So I can level my Skytrak and be confident that it's 100% level anytime I set it down on the granite.

What keeps my mat from sliding are the concrete screws I have drilled through the hititng mat into concrete. I believe I used a 3/16 inch concrete bit and 2 inch long 3/16 inch concrete screws. I put a washer on top to help squeeze the mat to the floor. I only put these screws on the front left and right of each (5'x5') turf mat. I didn't put any screws on the back sides, but probably would only make it better.

I'm not sure what machine screw size those were in the bottom of my Skytrak. I would take your Skytrak to the hardware store and start trying different screws until you find one that works. I found some at my house that fit so not sure of the size, but they are very tiny and short.

So in my setup I have a concrete floor, then very thin basic turf on the entire floor. Then my thicker hitting turf mat. But I no longer have sliding issues with screwing into the concrete floor. It's nice to not have to worry about alignment changing and the painted line being off when the mat moved.

Mike , nice set up , I'll have to do something similar to the solid slab as my skytrak doesn't sit great on the mat I have . Where did you get your hitting mat from ?

Smudge_sl, I bought my turf mats from AllTurfMats.com. I bought two 5' x 5' commercial grade turf mats. I originally had the monster tee turf, but after a year I started hating the monster tee turf. It was too thick. It was squishy standing on it and not firm. I think the thick turf would eat your club sometimes and reduce club speed.

I am very happy with these. They feel more like hitting from a fairway. At $179 I think these are the best mats for the price. See link below.

I took a little advice from a few posters... I bought some 6" tongue and groove boards of pine and assembled a 5'x5' wooden base base which I screwed into subbase, then used commercial grade double side to stick the mat onto wooden base. Worked like a charm ! I love Mike80's idea for the granite surface to put Skytrak on, I have some 1" plexi which I may end up using if my granite search doesn't work out. But for the mean time I have my Skytrak setup on my iPad kiosk ( which is the coolest thing ever ..bartered w my doctor to obtain ) and it work great. Made an adjustable stand, got it dead nuts level, and double sided taped it to kiosk. Thank for the help, check the before and after ( garage was a true dump ) now it's the golf lab !! Love this site

Nice setup. Love the kiosk stand! Yeah, the granite is the only thing heavy enough that doesn't allow any movement. Just go to a nearby granite place and ask to buy a little scrap piece for like $20 bucks. I painted the granite green though. Gotta have it looking good! ....haha!

I feel like the plexi I have is perfect , just kind of a sin to waste a piece of plexi that probably cost 4-5 hundred when I could get the right piece of granite on the cheap. Current setup is outstanding and as long as my 3 year old stays away ... Nothing is stopping it from staying level. UGH when is TGC going to be ready ... Need a new build aspect to be consumed by !!
