  • Projector Calculator clarification about Max room lighting

I am in the process of my starting my sim build. I am just trying to figure everything out at this point and I am now on projectors. I rifled through the forum and noticed the same projectors getting mentioned over and over... the Optoma GT1080 Darbee and the BenQ TH671ST and others.

I plan on having a 12W X 9H Screen which makes a perfect 4:3 aspect ratio to fill the screen. When I run the calculator for the different projectors I come up with the following:

GT1080 Darbee: Image Brightness 10FL Max room lighting 3% 1 fc
BenQ TH671ST: Same as GT1080 Same as GT1080

Based on the calculator it recommends 15 Fl image brightness. How important is the "image brightness" and "max room lighting" on the calculator. Seems to me it would be important, very important.

I can get a Optoma X305ST refurbished for $318, or less than half of the price of the others. It has 28 Fl image brightness and 19%, 7fc "max room lighting".

    The tradeoff is the resolution, 1024 X 768 vs. 1920 X 1080 (for 1080 and TH671).

    1. What should be more important for a dedicated golf sim projector....resolution or the "brightness"? I will be hitting about 10 feet from it if that matters.
    2. Does anyone have the X305ST? If so, how does it look?
    3. Is there something that I completely ignoring that I shouldn't?

Thank you in advance for any input or advice.

Hi, I ended up going with a Otpoma EH200ST. It is very nice. I found a nearly new one on EBAY for about $400. I ended up with a screen that is 13' wide by 10' high so going 4:3 didn't make sense any longer. I like the way it turned out. Do you have any other questions?

      Have a good day!

    Hi Josh,
im just starting my build and am looking at similar numbers. So you chose 16:9 and your height is about 7’4”. Is that correct?

Yes, 16:9, and yes, 7'4" sounds about right. I like the way it turned out but there is definitely horizontal space using a screen that size. depending on how you align the projector you can have the space above or below. I am about to move my image down a bit because I am having issues with my wedges spinning and hitting the ceiling. Moving the image down will allow me to add some fabric on top to catch those types of shots while not interfering with the size of view. LOTS of options.

What size screen are you looking at?

My screen hasn’t arrived yet. It’s 13’ wide 8’10” high. My ceiling is 9’6”. No projector yet.

Hi Guys, This is interesting, I have recently built my cage and am just waiting for the impact screen to arrive. My cage is 5 meters wide, 3 meters high and 4 meters deep. So screen is 16.4 ft wide and 9.8 ft high.

I am thinking I will mount the short throw projector on the ceiling 2.6 meters from the screen. So the strike mat/ point will be behind the projector (4 meters), so no shadows.

I am currently Considering these projectors:
      Optoma W316ST
      Vivetek DW882St.

I have attached pictures of the cage and throw calculations.

      Question;
Will the projector be safe at 2.5 from the screen when the strike mat is 4 meters from the screen?
      Any other recommendations for projectors?
      Any other comments/ thoughts/ advice?

      Thanks for any feedback.
