  • InFocus IN138HDST vs BenQ TH671ST - PART 3 of 3: BenQ TH671ST Review & The Winner!

    BenQ TH671ST

While I was testing the IN138HDST the BenQ TH671ST arrived and after using the IN138HDST for about 3 weeks of testing and sim play it was time to test drive the TH671ST. Due to the higher throw ratio of the TH671ST I was forced to remount the TH671ST at a greater distance from my impact screen than the IN138HDST. The IN138HDST was 9’ 7” (115”) from the impact screen and the TH671ST was mounted at 11’ 6” (138”). Trust me when I tell you I was NOT looking forward to mounting another projector to the ceiling after the trials and tribulations I went through to get the IN138HDST mounted correctly. However, in order to properly evaluate the TH671ST that is exactly what I needed to do. It was at this point that I realized a BEAUTIFUL feature that the BenQ has that the InFocus does not have and that is the 1.2x optical zoom feature. For those of you who have optical zoom in your projector you know what a wonder feature this is to have to get your image exactly where you want it and at the exact size you want it. The TH671ST allowed me to mount the projector close to the ideal spot and then make the fine image size adjustments by simply rotating the zoom lens in and out to get the image to adjust perfectly to the impact screens dimensions. That’s not to say you can just throw the TH671ST anywhere you want and all will be well. You still need to use ProjectorCentral.com’s image throw calculator to get as close to the perfect spot as possible. On that note incidentally, BenQ has a very handy throw calculator tool on their website as well that I found to be very helpful to use. You can find that calculator here: https://projectorcalculator.benq.com/

With the 2 website calculators, my super adjustable ceiling mount and the 1.2x optical zoom feature, mounting the TH671ST was MUCH easier at least for a DIY’er like myself. This brings me to the next aspect of the TH671ST that made it a slam dunk for me. As mentioned earlier my complaint about the InFocus IN138HDST projector was that the image had a “fuzziness” to it that never looked to be fully in sharp focus. This was something that I was paying very close attention to when testing the BenQ and I am very happy to report that I was able to focus the BenQ very well. Is it as sharp as my 75” Samsung QLED upstairs…. Nope! That is an unrealistic expectation. Can I see detail in the computer generated images running Foresight FSX 2018… ABSOLUTELY! The fuzziness was gone and I realized that I could have my cake and eat it too! Is there better out there. Of course there is. This is a $685 projector. If you want to spend more I am sure you can get your image closer to my Samsung upstairs but keeping things realistic… I am VERY happy with the image that the TH671ST produces and it is only going to get better as I get closer to the completion of my sim room since I plan on installing better lighting, adding blackout to the sides of the screen and adjusting the screen tension to reduce some of the “waviness” in the screen which can distort the projected image.

A couple other notes about the TH671ST I wanted to mention. I have a brand new set up with equipment that meets or exceeds current standards including a new computer running an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card with ample RAM. I have very little delay from the time I hit the ball to the time I see the ball project on to my impact screen. Although I have no way of actually objectively testing what I think my eye sees… but I do believe that I noticed an improvement with the slight delay that I do get when using the TH671ST vs. the IN138HDST. I asked BenQ about this and make no mistake about it… the TH671ST was designed and built as a gaming projector and one of the things that this projector was designed for was to minimize what is called “input lag”. Basically, that is the time it takes the projector to receive the image data from whatever the source is and then process that data to produce an image. Of course, there are MANY links in this chain but I felt that I could see a slight yet noticeable difference with the image production time using the TH671ST.

To see a video of the image production speed (Input Lag Test) on my system click below:
    https://youtu.be/_TBWy0sQkcU

I will also mention that the TH671ST has a smaller footprint than the IN138HDST. This was not a factor for me but just mentioning it since I know that some sim setups are very tight on space and every inch can matter. The dimensions of the 2 units are below for your reference:

    InFocus IN138HDST: 4.9” x 9.3” x 12.3”
    BenQ TH671ST: 4.7” x 8.8” x 11.6”

    BenQ TH671ST - Pictures
    * Note that if you see what appears to be a duplicate picture of an image on the impact screen, it is actually 2 separate pictures, one with very minimal ambient light and the other picture is with a single recess light on above the hitting mat.

In conclusion, I think both projectors produced an image that allowed me to enjoy playing simulated golf let alone doubling my golf sim as a home theater/television. However, if the price for the IN138HDST & the TH671ST were exactly the same I would have chosen the TH671ST due to the priceless digital zoom feature and the TH671ST’s ability to produce a crisper clearer focused image. The gravy on top is the fact that the TH671ST is $130 cheaper (retail) at the time this review was written. That said, fortunately for me I had the extra room in my sim set up to mount the TH671ST nearly 2 feet further back in order to produce the image size that I wanted. If I did not have the extra space and I still wanted the 209” diagonal image size I would have had to make some tough choices pertaining to size versus image quality. I am happy to say I was able to have the best of both worlds!

Ive only had one projector and it's nice to know I picked the correct one. Big thumbs up to th671. You don't have to be perfect in placement with that zoom and focus. Very user friendly great picture but then again I didn't have anything to compare to. Thanks for the post.

Amen on the zoom and focus features! Really was a game changer for me. Glad you are as happy as I am with it. Like you, I don't have a lot of comparisons but I feel for the money this projector would be very hard to beat!

Based on the pics, i see what you are saying about the sharpness of the image. You can see it in the text.

Does the top of the image start inline with the center of the lens on the BenQ?

I don't remember the exact spec on that but I think it was like 6 inches below definitely not more than a foot.

    Shellman19,

Thanks for the detailed writeup. Really awesome and very much appreciated. Lot of hard work can be seen here.

Could you let us know how wide your overall room is? Looks like the screen, at 182", pretty much covers the room. Thanks.

My room width is 16' 5" (197"). Here is a pic I took before I started my build out.

I may have missed it if you posted it but could you please post up your graphics settings. I have the same projector and a 1070 card and no where near the picture you are showing.

I think I have the card maxed but I'm thinking not now.

When you say "graphics settings" are you referring to my video card or the video/picture settings on the projector itself?

I have the screen from Daniel, offered here in the group purchase. Looks 100 times better then the Supertex screen I had.

Remember that pictures taken on the phone dramatically enhances the contrast and even the perceived clarity it's not representative of being in the simulator

Did shellman say what screen he was using? Im using carls premium and the th671. I think it looks awesome but probably better when I take a picture of it. Like solstice said

StanMI Not exactly sure what settings you were interested in so just took a bunch of screenshots for you. Let me know if there is something else that you would like me to take a screenshot of and happy to do so.

StanMI Wizard of Coz I have the "Direct from Mill" (most recent batch) from Daniel. I was never able to figure out what side of the screen was the intended side to be facing outward so that I am not really sure about.

I would have to agree with Solstice72 that the posted pics do in fact look better than what it looks like in my sim... I guess I should have stated that clearly in my OP but it is not a gross exaggeration of what it looks like IRL. I would say the biggest factor is ambient light. If I have all the lights down at night time the projected image looks just as good as the posted pics. If there is some ambient light then the pics posted look better than actually standing in my sim. Hope that helps?

StanMI So that said, did I omit anything you were interested in or did I get you everything you were curious about on the Nvida control panel?

By the way... there is a max to how much you can write in any one post so just in case it helps this topic was a 3 part post.
If you are interested in reading any of the other material I posted on this topic you can read about it here:

wbond I contacted BenQ directly about your question and this is what I was told:

"No, by default, there will be an offset %, meaning that if your ceiling-mounted Th671ST is leveled without any tilting, the top of the image will be lower than the center of lens. See the offset spec below. here is a quick reference site for you to calculate the offset distance after knowing the projector offset%"

That said see this PDF: https://www.hcinema.de/pdf/infocus-i...-offset-en.pdf

Saw your multiple posts on picking a projector, lots of great info! I was going to pick up the in138hdst before reading your post about the blurriness. I don’t think the th671st you got would be an option for me. The screen is 16’ x 9’ and projector central says that may not be bright enough because it’d have to be mounted 11’-12’ from screen. Based on your first hand testing would you agree with that or do you think the brightness would be okay from that distance. Or would you accept the image of the in138hdst and be able to mount it closer (7-8’) with higher brightness? Really appreciate your posts, thanks!

Matt Dizel Our screen sizes are very similar and I have my BenQ TH671ST mounted at 11' 6". I of course can't tell you that your sim room will have the same experience as mine but I can tell you that I am personally satisfied (no happy!) with the TH671ST at that distance. I will say that I am able to control the amount of ambient light I have in my room pretty well so that is certainly a factor and if you are going to have a lot of ambient light I would say that the TH671ST might be getting close to maxing out it's effectiveness if it were mush further back away from the impact screen. To answer your question directly... well really your question was/is my reality... I did in fact choose the BenQ over the InFocus. I did not really think there was any question as to which one performed better. To summarize, I would get the BenQ set it up in your room and just make sure you have the option to return it if you are unhappy. I think at this price point the BenQ will be difficult to beat.
