  • Best projector for under $4500. Home theatre/Golf.

My sim room in the house will be 17 x 30 x 10. I like to hit from 12 feet away. The room will double as a home theatre room. My computer is totally capable of 4k. I was thinking about the Optoma 4K550ST Projector

    3840x2160 DLP, 4,500 lumens, 10,000:1 contrast,

But I am worried about not being happy with the contrast ratio. My current projector is more suited for movies than golf. It has 1600 lumens and 100,000:1 contrast ratio. I want more lumens and maybe 4k. I am not sure about the contrast ratio being so low on the 4k550ST. My image will be 16x9 and I could mount the projector anywhere from 10 feet away to 18 feet. 12 feet would be ideal. Suggestions?

From what I understand the contrast ratio has become worthless as a metric from the manufacturers. They manipulate the number as there is not a true standard. You would think they would make a bigger number than 10k:1. On one hand one part me says it'll be just fine. The other hand says, "why is it so low." I get the dilemma, you want that machine. It looks sweet. I sweated my machine for a while. The contrast level was listed rather low too I think. No real complaints about mine. I hate you can't walk into a store to view these things.

Strongly recommend against 4k550st if you plan to use for movies. i have had one for several months, am now working with Optoma to replace with something else, they have been helpful. PM me, if you want more details.

I was told very clearly by Optoma HQ in Taiwan that the 4k550st was being withdrawn at the begining of August. It was not on the market for very long so there must be an issue with it.

I will be able to have a blacked out room while watching TV. Here is an image of my current projector. The photo was taken with my phone.

Thanks for the feedback, I will keep looking. I might stay with 1080p. I have lots of time.

After doing some more research, I might lower my $4500 to $3500 CAD.

Is that one really 4K? I just looked and it appears that it is a 1080p with the pixel shifting. — never mind. eBay listing seems to be wrong. It looks like 4k

I am actually going to buy the new GT1090 HDR. 4200 lumens in my new sim room that will have no ambient light. Laser light source and short throw. For $1400, you can't go wrong.
