  • My head is spinning on projector aspect and throws: Help a newbie out

    Good evening all,

Long time listener, first time caller.
I have always wanted to put some sort of sim in my home but never had the ceiling height.

Recently I purchased a home with an unfinished basement which had 10 ft. Ceilings

After putting on boxing gloves with the wife as we “jockied” for position in the new house, I needed up with a ST system and Carl’s golf DIY enclosure 11.7 x 7 ft 16:10

A family friend of ours is employed by Casio. I have him my preferred native aspect ratio (noted above) and preferred resolution. He provided me with two projectors to try out before possibly purchasing one.

    model 1: XJ-F210WN https://www.projectorcentral.com/Casio-XJ-F210WN.htm

    model 2:
    XJ-UT310WN https://www.projectorcentral.com/Casio-XJ-UT310WN.htm

I have only mounted model 1, to the ceiling and no matter what I do, I can’t even come remotely close to filling the screen unless I am extremely far back.

Currently I am mounted 15 feet from my
    screen.
I have played around with my pc’s resolutions and output settings. Attempted to play with keystone, aspect, digital zoom and all other menu functions on the projector.

I am tech literate but projectors, throw, and aspect ratios are not my forte. On the calculator, I got a throw of 229”. Is that possible?

Anyone have any input for me?
I know there are countless threads similar to this and I apologize for the redundancy. I just can’t read anymore scenarios which are similar but not the same as mine.

Lastly, pardon the poor typing. I’ve been at this for a while and my eyes are last heavy.

Hoping to wake up to some suggestions in the am.

    Thanks in advance

    Marc

It looks to me that if your model 1 is mounted 14'10" from the screen it will fill up 11'3" wide and 7' high (using full zoom). This would be similar to where your current projector is mounted. So if that distance works for you then your model 1 should work fine as well.

Personally, I have a short throw projector (BenQ TH671ST) that is pretty much mounted directly above the ball in my set up. This projector could be mounted 8' from your screen and fill up 11'7" wide and 6'6" high (using full zoom).

Really it all depends on where you want the projector in your setup and how far back you will be from your screen.

Looking at that projector's specs, if you mount it at 14'6" and max the zoom you should be able to produce an image that is 132" wide and 82" tall. The screen height is your limiting factor here. If you currently have it mounted at 15', you should have an image that is overlapping the screen (if you maxed the zoom). I personally don't like maxing anything, I want to position the projector to produce an image as close to native as possible without using keystone, zoom, etc.

The problem you're going to run into is cutting off the image when you're hitting a shot. How far away from the screen do you intend on playing from? Typically, in a ceiling mounted scenario, you'd position the projector directly over the golfer so you're not casting shadows on the screen. If you tried to mitigate the shadows by hitting balls from 15 feet away, you're going to be sending golf balls into your ceiling with higher lofted clubs.

I'd recommend finding a short throw projector with a ratio closer to .5. The projector you currently have mounted has a 1.32 ratio. The other one he recommended has a .28 ratio. The .28 ratio would work better IMO, but you'd need to protect it with a heavy duty cage because you'd be mounting it about 3 feet from the screen. You also have to take the offset into consideration (how far down from the ceiling).

If you mount a projector directly over the golfer, the cage would not be necessary.

Use projector centrals older Flash based calculator. It provides more information about placement and specs.
