  • 4k vs 1080

I have a brand new PC with lots of power. I currently run TCG2019 with my Skytrak and I absolutely love it. Is it worth investing in a new projector to get the 4k resolution of TGC2019?

Will I see a lot of difference with 4k? Would it apply to all courses?

    Thanks

The first question you want to ask yourself it is going to be bright enough will you Get Enough lumens with the 4K, how big is your screen? The game is 4k then. I'm going to use words like it'll be pretty good but you won't be gobsmacked

i have a serious pc also, but im using an impact screen so it will never be as good as my 4k tv.....i run tgc2019 as high as i can, and it just wont be as clear as the tv. the projector would be nice upgrade in 4k, but if your running an impact screen imo its not worth it

If you pursue 4k, you would also want a top of the line screen made of multiple layers (I think about a quarter inch thick) that presents a continuous flat surface rather than woven. I have something similar to Carl's Preferred, looks great for 1080p TV or sim golf, but it is woven and you can see the individual pixels are distorted by the weave. There's probably a good review with testing durability on Golf Spy.com

Haven't seen a golf sim in 4k so this is all guess work but would agree with all the previous posts. With golf sim, I would say lumens would be the priority and then color accuracy. Since most of us play with some ambient lighting, contrast and resolution would have decreased impact with sim experience.
            My courses:
            Aldeen
            Butler National
            Cantigny
            Canyata
            Cog Hill #4

What is your GPU? Running TGC2019 in 4K with acceptable frame rates and detail renders are likely going to take an RTX-2080 or greater.

Will you be using the projector for possible video programming from a 4k device, or golf only?

                  I went with a 4k setup.

The ball is only 11'-12' away from a 14' wide image. I would agree that you won't get the precise focus and contrast of the LCD monitor on an impact screen. But, my goodness, it sure does make the course look much less pixelated. There are a lot of horizontal lines that blend very well in 2160p. You see that everytime you look toward the target and see thin glimpses of the sand, green, or rolls in the fairway.

I need to post side by side comparisons to make my case.

I think the biggest question is the cost of the 4K projector. The next one will be the lift output. Most 4K projectors are for home cinema use which is almost always made for dark rooms. Unfortunately, I believe we are still a bit away from getting more mass market 4K projectors. You also need a pretty high end graphics card to get good frames per second (perhaps not as needed for gold sim).

Dax You are correct about the price. 7 for the projector, 2 for the lens.
SkeetShooter You are correct about the graphics card. The nvidia 2080 ti is really pushed and is the weakest part of the setup. I have it maintaining approximately 60fps and had to use msi afterburner to manually increase the fan speed to keep it cool.

If anyone wants to know what it takes to play TGC2019 in 4k, my signature has my setup and it works very well with ambient light.

I was looking for a 10 year setup. The laser projector will maintain light output, and I have it reduced to about 80% to keep it in the quiet fan mode.

I recently upgraded to a 4k setup. About the same screen size as you. Remarkable improvement. With a screen of that size pixelation is very noticeable on 1080p. It's a whole new sim game at 4k. I went with the BenQ lk953st. It's a bit pricey at $5k, but short throw options are slim in the 4k space. This projector is amazing. Great lumens, good lens shift and zoom adjustments. Couldn't recommend it more.

That looks like an excellent projector with a good throw ratio. The prices on these high lumen 4k laser projectors will go down and their feature set will continue to increase. I agree that given the screen size and view distance, 4k is a great improvement.
