  • Projector Question

Hey guys, first post here but I've been reading as much as I can over the past few weeks. I have an 8x10 carls premium enclosure and I'm trying to finalize a projector. I've fallen further into the depths of projectors than I ever thought I would but I'm still not set on one. My space is a little limiting in that it's 10 foot ceilings, 11 feet wide and then 30 feet long. The way the ceiling works, a ceiling mount won't work because of some weird air ducts that run through half the room which drops the ceiling to 9 feet. I'm setting this up right hand only so the air ducts don't interfere with my swing.

I'm trying to avoid a floor projector because I have kids and ideally the projector would be on a table top just over my skytrak so that I can move it when it's not in use. Is the only way to do this with a projector with horizontal lens shift or keystone? Can I angle any quality projector and just lose some image quality/screen size or would it be a waste to do that? I don't need the most perfect image ever but I do care some.

This is mainly for practice range on Skytrak rather than sim golf but I don't want to limit myself and need to upgrade at a later date. I was looking at the Optoma EH460st but was just wondering if there is something else that could work given that I don't NEED a perfect image. Thanks!

Personally I would give second thought to the ceiling mount option. Keystone abilities of modern projectors allow you to be off to the side quite a bit (waaaay more than it used to be) and with your ceiling height variance, would a long ceiling mount not work? I suggest Chief mounts. They're the best, but not the cheapest. Reason I mention them is the amount of options they have. At least go to their website, https://www.legrandav.com/products/r...ector%20Mounts , to check out their stuff. Might give you other ideas at a minimum.

If you've started your deep-dive on projectors, I'm sure you've come across https://www.projectorcentral.com/ . Hands down the best resource in this arena. Reviews, Throw / Size Calculator, etc. That site is the best. What I always used for all my installs. (I used to maintain and redesign Command Centers)

Otherwise, is the floor option really so bad? The cage you'll put the projector in can handle repeated impacts from a golf ball. I know kids can be bad... but, DAMN! I'd just keep that in your back pocket as well.

Thanks for the reply. The ceiling is hard to describe but the change from 9 feet to 10 feet is directly above my head. The 9 foot is ahead of me and 10 foot is behind me. So my understanding on a ceiling mount, I'd want it to be above me or slightly out ahead of me. Out ahead of me is non attainable because of the air duct which runs the length of the room. Directly above me would have to accommodate the air duct as well. The floor mount is definitely a possibility but I'm just trying to avoid it. Part of the reason is I want my kids to hit some day and they'll probably be hitting from a spot where the projector would be until they get older and move back some.

If you're planning on putting, floor mount causes an issue there as well. I have my projector on the floor now. Built a protection box like Meatmiller's.
I'm considering doing a ceiling mount. I basically can't putt because the projector is in the way and the bigger issue to me is, when others have tried the sim they're worried that they will hit the projector box. Floor mount is doable but after my short experience I can see where ceiling mount is the way to go if you can do it.

Bumping this and wondering if anyone has mounted the projector to a carl's cage? I have the 5 foot depth cage and a short throw projector. Wondering if I could mount this to the cage and have the projector a foot or 2 away from the cage? I've seen this solution but haven't seen any feedback on it. Has anybody used this mounting option or something similar?

        Did u get the eh460st?
i have one and getting my screen tomorrow. In a different post I questioned the max size for the 460 as it states 152 inch max. Vs 300inch diagonal for the other optoma short throw projectors which is odd. I guess I will see in the next couple of days.

keep in mind that the optoma projectors have a large offset , almost 1.5ft for your 16:9 ft screen. So your ceiling needs to be 10.5ft to get the full picture from what I understand.

the BenQs have almost no offset but require a longer distance to screen. Like 11ft vs 8ft for optoma distance to screen. I will share what I learn but am curious about the 460st max screen size limitation. Maybe it’s just a recommendation but spec say 152 inch and we need 209 inch diagonal for 16:9 ft screen (same I am getting from par2pro tomorrow)
I really want ceiling too for convenience but have a garage door opener placed so limited to 8ft screen distance unless I can move it to the side a bit leveraging keystone correction. I assume that reduces quality? Anyway all good problems to have at these times ...

I ended up with the BenQ 671. I use it offset on a table next to my SkyTrak. The image is not perfect but it’s fine for me for the range. The new optoma 1090 hdr looks perfect on spec but not sure when it’s coming out.
