4k worth the upgrade?

Hey guys, I'm looking at a 16x10 SQ screen from Partopro, trying to decide on wuxga projector vs upgrading to 4K. System will be Uneekor, E6 connect with premium gaming computer...

I assume the texture of the impact screen is the limiting factor for resolution, so is there an appreciable difference between 1920 x 1200 vs upgrading to 4K in your experience?

I'm interested to see the responses here. I can't imagine getting that much of a real increase in quality with a 4K projector over 1080p due to the limitation of the screen material, like you said. If you did everything just right, I'm sure it would be "better", but would it be worth the cost difference? I guess only your wallet can tell you that.

Screen is gonna get dirty and negate the potential benefits fairly quickly anyway, right? Just guessing...

The screen is large relative to your viewing distance (12' away from 14' wide screen ). 2160p is relevant at these distances, and you will still want AA enabled.

My screen is from par2pro, and the resolution is resolved. Yes, there are marks and slight waves at the edges, but my goodness. ... All of the detail near your area of focus. Imagine the physical size, or rectangle, of a 55" tv against a 193" diagonal impact screen.

With a 1080p projector that 55" screen area would have an effective resolution of just over 300p.

The effective horizontal lines of that 55" screen area with a 2160p (4k) projector are 615 . That's a bit closer to DVD quality. Grass detail and distant object detail are impacted. It mattered to me. If you had a 55" tv with the effective resolution of 308p, would it be acceptable at 12'?

1.) Are you saying the difference is very noticable with a 4k projector, and which one are you using to make that comparison (the Epson L1300?). Have you looked at other projectors, in the store or elsewhere to see if they also do as well, or is the Epson your primary interest, or the only one that produces a good enough image at short throw range?

2.) What's a Par2Pro Stealth Screen - is that the ones that roll up into the ceiling?

1. The Epson L1300 has a native 1920x1200 image. It can receive 3840x2160 and will display part of the pixels, then shift and display the other portion of the image at a .5 pixels offset. This is known as pixel shifting. The effective resolution appears to be close to a 4k image. A native 3840x2160 panel will be better. You can start splitting hairs over effective resolution vs native pixel count, but this method has been analyzed in many articles and is considered very effective.

I went purely off of the specs and reviews to make my purchase. I knew the mounting height, distance to screen, and image size for this project. The choice was first bound by those constraints. I searched for projectors with these known variables and also placed a requirement to generate 50 foot lamberts on a 168" wide screen (193" diagonal). It is expensive to target such a goal. But, 50fL is known to work with ambient light in a room. I have dealt with lower lumen, bulb based, projectors at work and did not want their fading, ever changing, weak output on a large impact screen in a room that shouldn't be dark. I don't play real golf at night and didn't want to practice playing on the sim in "dusk-like" conditions, with a spotlight on the ball, just to see the screen. Lights are directed in the room. During the day, there is outside light to contend with, and any extra lumens help.

It's best to contact a dealer when you order a projector like this. You will receive quotes from them with projector, lens, other hardware, and costs. Also, they should review all of your dimensions and also make recommendations for other projectors and mounting requirements and hardware to make the installation just right. Prices you see on-line are not right at all. They were about 30% less when I received a formal quote.
