  • 16:9 to 4:3 ---- effect on resolution?

I posted this as a reply in an old thread but didn't have any luck so I figured I'd try it as a new post. Searched the old threads but didn't see anything specific to my question....

I currently have a Promethean projector that is 1024x768 native that I use on a 10x10 screen. In 4:3, it fills the screen from left to right and leaves a little space on top and bottom. I don't have the space for a wider screen, so I'm fine sticking to 4:3 on a square screen.

    Now onto my questions...

1.) I'm looking to upgrade my projector. If I get one that is 1920x1080 native but has a 4:3 option, what will the resolution become when I switch it to 4:3?

    1280x960?

    1400x1050?

    1440x1080?

I'm guessing it can't go to 1600x1200 if there are only 1080 vertical pixels. (But that also just might reflect my ignorance of this subject).

In other words, how do you know what resolution the projector will give you once you switch it to a 4:3 display? Is there a tool on projector central (or anywhere else) that shows this? Does it vary by projector?

2.) If 4:3 is not the native resolution of the projector, does switching it to 4:3 distort the image in any way? Do objects appear skinnier or fatter than they should? Will I lose any parts of the image?

3.) It seems like most of the projectors that are 4:3 native are only 1024x768 (same as I have now). I've seen some that are 1600x1200 or 1400x1050 native but they are either quite pricey or don't have the throw ratio that I need. What is the best route to go when working with a 4:3 display? Basically, I'd like to maximize my resolution in 4:3 (without spending thousands) and wondering what my options are.

I have an opportunity to buy an Optoma 1080Darbee for $500. Is it a waste of money to buy a 1920x1080 unit if you're going to be using it in 4:3? In other words, will it really be that much of an upgrade from my current 1024x768 setup since I won't really be maximizing the full resolution potential of it in 4:3?

Any and all help is appreciated.

I'm having the same question. Bumping this up, hoping someone can give us a little insight

Since you bumped it up, I suppose I'll update myself...

I went ahead with a 1920x1080 projector. I set my computer resolution to 1600x1200 and then set TGC to the same. It looks great, and the image is miles better than the 1024x768 setup I had previously. So I assume that 1600x1200 was/is indeed possible.

So what resolution do you think it's projecting? I assumed the extra horizontal pixels that were not used (going from 1920 to 1600) would be moved to fill in the remaining vertical pixels needed (when going from 1080 to 1200). No? What's a 1920x1080 native resolution when set to 4:3?

        Thanks for your response
@aja: So in this case, could it be the image is 1440x1080 (4:3 ratio) then?

        That sounds more plausible.
    Working...
