  • Epson 5040ub

While I bit the bullet and bought a pixel shifting 4k projector for my theatre room to replace my now 8 year old runco projector. Before moving it into my theatre room, I decided to see how it might look during the daytime in my sim room. I am attaching some pictures for you to see, but apart from not being as bright, the image is actually very good and the colors and contrast are far better than what I have at the moment. The projector I bought was the Epson 5040ub and is rated for 2,400 lumens I believe. However, as you can see in the pictures it is actually projecting a pretty good image from about 18 feet from the screen (I have about an 11 foot wide screen). I have also attached a picture to show how bright it is in the back of my room and I should also note that the only direct light interfering with the projector would be my the spot light in my hitting position was turned on. Also to note that the picture is only in medium lamp mode and my 5,500 lumen panasonic (PT-EZ580 - not to be confused with the VZ580 which is new are a far better projector) was in its lowest lamp setting.

While I really like my Panasonic, as its brightness works great when I have other lights in my room to use my cameras for videoing my swing etc. I must say the image of the new projector was excellent. My plans are to keep the Panasonic, but wanted to post this as an alternative for those who are thinking of a 4k pixel shift projector and you have a room where you can control your lighting a bit more than what I can. Also, I should not that there are some limitations on this projector in that the only 4k (60p) signal that the projector can handle is with Chroma subsampling at 4:2:0 with 8-bit color (if memory serves me correctly).

For the price and those that don't care about the 4k, then I think the Eiki 308u or the Panasonic VZ580 to still be very good options.
