I've been a longtime reader of the forums but never built my sim because of some expensive ceiling height adjustments needed in my garage and knowing I was going to have to relocate at some point in the future. Well, the move finally happened and I somehow convinced the wife that our best apartment option was the one with a TruGolf Vista 10 down the hall... Unfortunately, it turns out the projector doesn't work. I have gone back and forth with the manager for 10 weeks now and I'm tired of dealing with him and tired of waiting. So, in frustration last night, I ordered an Optoma GT1080HDR.
The projector with the Vista 10 doesn't show a model number but based on an old Optoma press release I found online and the fact that they look identical in all the pictures I can find, I am very confident the Vista 10 projector is an Optoma x316ST. The x316st is 3400 lumens, has +/- 40 keystones, and no optical or digital zoom. I've found several available online and it seems like a safe bet to just get the x316st. However, in the few seconds I could get it to turn on, I struggled to get the picture well-trimmed to the screen and I would like a brighter image. The x316st has a 0.617 throw ratio. That doesn't make sense to me because I have measured about 87 inches from lens-to-screen (floor-mounted-box to the bottom of the screen) and the screen is about 120"x78" (so 140" Diagonal?). With no optical/digital zoom, this doesn't make sense to me but the image did seem close to fitting in width with the assumed x316st There were probably 12 inches of vertical space empty. I'm fully computer-capable enough to change screen resolutions with more than a few seconds to make it work, so it could have just been the desktop display was mirrored at 16:9. I have no experience with projectors but have read quite a bit trying to figure this out.
My first question: will the GT1080HDR work given the 87" floor-mounted lens to the bottom edge of the screen? I convinced myself the GT1080HDR's 0.5 throw ratio with 0.8-2.0x digital zoom would let me shrink the image (87" * 2 = 174", and 174" * 0.8 = 139"). Did I make a mistake by not measuring to the center of the projected image?
My second projector question: is there a better option for this application? The GT1080HDR doesn't get delivered for a few more days and I have no problem returning it if I can find a better solution. I am limited by the fact that I do not own this simulator so moving the tee area/projector box and installing ceiling mounts aren't options. I also like the projector box because there is already a power source and HDMI cable there. I will be carrying the projector in with me each time I use the sim so it marks my spot for where to put the projector. I'm trying to keep it around or under $1000 (The GT1080HDR was $800 new). I would be willing to go a few hundred $$ higher to add certain features such as optical zoom, lens shift, or more brightness (with brightness being my most valued feature), but I know my budget makes this hard. The computer is running e6 1.6 and doesn't have amazing specs so 4k is of no use to me.
Any advice for this simulator rookie?
