  • Finding the right projector -- 10' to 14' from screen

Sorry to create a separate post -- I've gone through many older posts and haven't found a good answer.
I'm doing a new build with Uneekor QED. My space is 9'9" high and I have about 18' depth before there are some pipes to avoid. (width is not an issue)
    I'm planning a 16'x9' screen.
I'd like to have the hitting spot 10' to 14' from the screen. The QED would be 3-1/2' behind hitting spot on the ceiling.
I'd like the projector to be directly above or behind the hitting spot. I think it should be in front of the QED.

My issue is that 10'-14' is too long for short throw projectors and too short for a normal throw projector. (from that I've seen) I'd like to keep projector cost in the $700-1100 range. I've found many short throw options -- but I really don't want to put the projector ahead of the hitting spot.

I've gone through many projector options using the projector calculators.

    Am I missing something ?

    Move your hitting spot forward?

8-10 feet seems to be the sweet spot between comfort (not too close to screen) and avoiding hitting your more lofted clubs directly into the ceiling vice the screen. You may want to move your desired hitting position up to say 9feet. Then there will be many ST in the 7-8 feet range. QED can then go comfortably further back. My two cents.

Yes -- I know I could go closer to the screen. I hit at another's setup last year who had it at 8'. It just felt a little tight and I like look & feel by having it back a little farther. And I have plenty of space. I'd also like to setup a larger putting area in front of the hitting mat. I'd also like to have the projector slightly behind the hitting spot if possible.

I'm just surprised that there aren't options for projectors in the 10'-14' distance.

My overhead projector (Benq 2150ST) is mounted 10 feet from my screen. There are also other short throw projectors (Benq MW632ST, etc.) that you can also mount 10 feet away. Use the projector calculator and remember that you can use the zoom feature on the projector that normally gives you +/- one foot to play with.

Posted in the other thread too, but in case others care, the BenQ TH671ST Projector looks like it mounts at 12' for your dimensions.

Some good discussion in this thread: Launch angles and distance from net - Golf Simulator Forum

I guess it really comes down to personal preference. As I mentioned earlier, for what it is worth 10 feet +/- seems to be the preferred hitting distance from the fairly experienced crowd on this forum. The closer you are the more "immersive" the experience may be. The further away you are, the more balls you will hit over the net with your higher lofted clubs. Anyway, sounds like the TH671ST Foreman33 suggests may work for you. A bit closer and you will have many more options.

FWIW I hit from 11'. I like it but wouldn't want to be any further away.

I agree with most. I have a 16' screen and I hit anywhere between 10 and 11. I would say 9-11 seems to work for most.

Thanks for all the comments. I decided to buy the BenQ TH671ST today. I'm planning for 10'-11' throw distance. I was leaning toward something with higher lumens -- projectorcentral suggested this projector might be too far away from the screen. But the online reviews were very good and I have a closed (dark) basement and I'll mainly use it for golf -- so I think it will work well.

I've figure out most of the simulator details. I'm building the enclosure similar to what is suggested by gunghogolf.com. But I'm still trying to figure out what to to put on my ceiling since I want a dark ceiling look (outside of the enclosure -- which will be ~4' from the screen) -- and I want zero risk of hitting the ceiling directly. I'm looking at acoustic foam tile -- not sure if I can find something that I can attach directly onto the first floor joists. I'd like to reduce some of the sound if possible.
