I've been looking at projector central and seems like for a 220" diagonal screen the the throw distance is 28' or so. Is that correct? I have some space but was hoping to have it way closer.

The throw distance is entirely dependent on the projector (or in the case of high end projectors the lenses as well). Bmartin15, the max screen size that may be listed by a projector is sort of an arbitrary number. The main issue why projectors list a size is brightness. I projector can only output a certain amount of light which will be the same for a 5ft screen or a 20ft screen. As the screen size increases the light density decreases to at some point the image brightness will not be acceptable under any conditions. If you are able to control the lighting and keep it relatively dark in your space, you can get away with a large image with a budget (low brightness) projector.

Much higher lumens is going to be much higher price. It is really dependent on your budget and lighting conditions. It's really hard to judge without trying out the projector. I realize this isn't that helpful.

It's all dependent on the throw ratio of the projector. Here is the projector that I have. For 220 diagonal inches in 16:9, you would mount it 8 feet from the screen.

The throw ratio of this one is 0.5. So if you're trying to mount something near your hitting area, you'll want to look at projectors that have throw ratios in the ballpark of 0.5 to maybe 0.8 or so.
